UNI Set For Larry Wieczorek Invitational

CEDAR FALLS – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program returns to Iowa City this weekend as they compete in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational Jan. 20-21.
The meet, which will include the women's pentathlon, begins at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, finishing up at 8:20 p.m. that evening. On Saturday, competition begins again at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the meet taking place at 7:20 p.m. with the 4X400 meter relays.
The Larry Wieczorek Invitational is hosted by the University of Iowa in the Iowa Recreation Building and will include competitors from Florida State, Iowa State, Iowa and the Panthers.
It is the second weekend in a row that the Panthers have competed at the University of Iowa, starting their season on Jan. 14 at the Hawkeye Invitational. UNI currently has 12 men ranked in the top-eight in the Missouri Valley Conference in nine events while on the women's side, the Panthers have eight ranked in six events.
Brandon Carnes opened his senior campaign with the fastest time in the MVC in the 200 meter dash, putting in a time of 21.62 at the Hawkeye Invite. The Bradenton, Fla., native is a 12-time Valley Champion, holding the school record in the 60 meters and is second all-time in the 200.
The Panthers have two men ranked high in the middle distance races with Bo Hjelle and C.J. May posting personal-bests in the 800 and mile last weekend. Hjelle turned in a time of 1:56.03 to win the 800 meters at the Hawkeye Invitational to rank fifth in the Valley while May ran the mile in 4:14.14 to also land in the top-five in the conference.
On the women's side, Lyndsie Schinkel kicked off 2017 with a win in the 800 meters, recording the second-fastest time in the Valley this year in 2:11.83 for a personal-best. Maddie Irmen also claimed a victory at the Hawkeye Invitational, running an indoor PR of 25.57 in the 200 meters for the win.
In the field, UNI's throwers were the stars of the show with Sarah Pate scoring the fifth-best mark in UNI history in the weight throw. She placed second overall at the Hawkeye Invite with a toss of 60-10.75. Brad Walski also turned in a strong performance in both the weight throw and the shot put, winning the shot put with a PR of 56-3.00.
