Carnes Sets UNI, MVC Records In Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Brandon Carnes made his return to the 60 meter dash today at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, winning the event in record shattering form.
The Bradenton, Fla., native first qualified for the finals in the 60 meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.60, breaking his own UNI and Missouri Valley Conference records.
He followed it up with his second career-best of the day, winning the race in 6.59, breaking both records again and ranking himself second in NCAA Division I track and field this season. His time of 6.59 was also an Iowa Recreation Center facility record that was set in 2006.
Jon Rus continued the momentum into the 60 meter hurdle preliminary race, running the third fastest time in school history. He ran a time of 7.98 to rank second in the Valley. Cade Kirkpatrick and Austin Heitland also set personal-bests, running times of 8.61 and 9.29.
In the middle distance and distance races, UNI had several Panthers improve their times in the premier races. Starting in the 800 meters, Lindsey Kite finished second with a personal-best of 2:10.88 which is the fastest time in the MVC this season.
Ashley Norem also posted a fast time, placing third behind kite with an indoor PR of 2:12.12. On the men's side, Colynn Black placed fourth overall with an indoor career-best of 1:53.12 to land him in the top-four in the Valley.
Hannah Truniger, the MVC Freshman of the Year during the cross country season, shined for the Panthers in the 3,000 meters. She finished fourth in the race with the fastest time in the MVC heading into the weekend. Her time of 9:49.91 ranks her fourth all-time in the Purple and Old Gold.
In the field, a pair of Panther throwers earned top-five finishes with Allison Griffin and Brad Walski finished fifth in the women's and men's shot put. Griffin finished with a personal-best toss of 46-4.00 while Walski put in a mark of 55-10.25.
The Panthers wrapped up the day with the 4X400 meter relays. The women's team of Lyndsie Schinkel, Norem, Theresa Connelly and Jenna Lederman won the open race with a time of 3:56.22 while Maddie Bell, Maddie Irmen, Kite and Jolissa Kriegel ran a season-best time of 3:49.83 in the premier race.
For the men, the team of Jacob Smith, Luke Johnston, Bryce Newcomb and Corey Hertz competed in the premier race, placing third overall. The finished with a time of 3:15.12 for a season-best and to rank second in the MVC.
The Panthers return to action when they host the Jack Jennett Invitational, Jan. 26-27, followed by the Mark Messersmith Invitational on Jan. 28. Both meets will take place in the UNI-Dome.
