CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI swimming and diving team will make its season debut on Saturday afternoon with its annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet, set to begin at 12 p.m. CT in the Glen F. Henry Pool at the Wellness-Recreation Center.
The event is free to attend and open to all fans. Spectators are also encouraged to attend the team's annual alumni meet at the WRC beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT, followed by a tailgate.
Serving as a tune-up ahead of the regular season, the intrasquad meet will be the Panthers' first chance to compete before next Friday, Oct. 10, when UNI travels to Iowa for an away dual meet.
Northern Iowa is coming off a fourth-place finish at last season's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships in Waukee. The Panthers return a number of talented athletes from last year's roster, including All-MVC performers Morgan Meyer and Abby Lear, both a part of the 200-yard freestyle team from last year that placed first at the conference championships, setting a new MVC record for a second straight season with the program's second fastest time ever in 1:30.74. Meyer also placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle for Northern Iowa at the meet as well.
The Panthers also return senior Hannah Nedder, who was a part of the 400-yard medley from last season that placed seventh at conference, and Elyse Brayton, an All-MVC Honorable Mention performer who finished eighth in her first career MVC A-Final in the 100-yard backstroke. Both were also a part of the 200-yard medley that finished in sixth place with a time of 1:41.71, the seventh-fastest mark in team history.
In the diving well, the Panthers return four core divers, including All-MVC Honorable Mention performers Avery Hogan, Trista Thompson and Erica Peters, the latter of whom competed at NCAA Diving Zones. Sophomore Natalie Devoll returns for UNI with the addition of freshmen Addison Bausman and Eva Coonrad.
Other notable returners include Sydney Aird, Abigail Barkhurst, Crystal Benjamin, Jenna Breitbach, Aspen Cole, Natalie Harris, Molly Johnson, Sam Oeltjen, Josie Parton, Peyton Pasqualicchio, Cali Prochaska, Rachel Rolow, Paige Seehawer, and Nikki Walters.
UNI also adds 12 new faces to the program, including swimmers Jennifer Barajas, Averie Bilskemper, Sabra Brueggen, Julia Eastman, Neriah Giedrys, Natalie Kuboushek, Cassidy Miklos, Ceci Nicholson, Morgan Raether, Charlotte Sander, Kiersten Tarran, and Athieno Wandera.
