UNI golf: Panther men surge to second place finish at Stampede At The Creek

Panthers turn attention to MVC Championships. UNI women face conference opponents next week, with the men taking the course in two weeks time.
ELKHORN, Neb. --- UNI men's golf made an impressive third round push, picking up a strong second place team finish as Stampede At The Creek on Tuesday at the Indian Creek Golf Course, coming up just one stroke shy of clinching a team title.
The Panther men shot a collective score of 866, one stroke behind team champion St. Thomas (Minn.) UNI held the overall lead for a large portion of the tournament, shooting a tournament-best 287 in Sunday's first round. The Panthers also scored the best combined team score in the third round at 291.
Griffin Parker led UNI on the individual leaderboard, shooting a combined 215 (-1) to finish in third place, his highest finish of the season. Sinking 12 total birdies over the course of the three-round event, Parker shot under par in two rounds. Connor Van Weelden finished not far behind in a tie for fourth place at 217 (+1), aided by a strong second round score of 71 (-1).
JD Pollard registered his best individual finish as a Panther in a tie for eighth place, scoring a 218 (+2), thanks to a season-tying best score in the first round of 71 (-1). Tommy Doyle tied for 15th place at 221 (+5), while Thomas Storbeck tied for 28th with a score of 225 (+9). Nile Petersen finished in a tie for 31st, shooting a 227 (+11), while Jack Moody and Brandon McCarty, both playing as individuals, both shot within one shot of one another with Moody shooting a 233 (+17) and McCarthy recording a 234 (+18) in his first tournament of the spring.
On the women's side, the Panthers faced a tough challenge with a ninth place team finish. Anna Jensen led the UNI ladies with a tie for 22nd place, shooting a season-best 72 in the final round to score a 230 (+14). Jensen's final round included three birdies, including a pair consecutively on the 11th and 12th holes.
Anna Nacos posted a final score of 232 (+16) in a tie for 26th, notching a 76 (+4) in the opening round, while Victoria Hualde Zúñiga opened the weekend with a first round score of 78 (+6), finishing with a total of 239 (+23) in a tie for 42nd. Lily Bredemeier tied for 49th place after carding a 242 (+26), with Rylie Driskell competing individually and taking 55th place at 248 (+32) and Madison Humke clinching 60th place with a 267 (+51).
UP NEXT
The UNI women head to Waterloo, Illinois for the MVC Championships, hosted by Bradley University at the Anbriar Golf Course, April 16-18. The Panther men will return to action April 23-25 at the MVC Championships, where they will serve as hosts at the Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois.
