Panthers Ready For Iowa State Classic, Tyson Invite

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa is set for a tough competition weekend with the Iowa State Classic and the Tyson Invitational.
The bulk of the Panthers will head to Ames for an in-state battle while Brandon Carnes, Jon Rus, Cole Phillips and Daurice Fountain will all compete in Fayatteville, Ark. at the Tyson Invite. Both meets take place Feb. 10-12.
UNI gets started on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Iowa State Classic with the long jump going at 11 a.m., followed by track events at noon. In Arkansas, the hurdlers will kick off the meet at 2:05 p.m. with Carnes running at 2:50 p.m.
Carnes will have the chance to run against the best in the country collegiately at the Tyson Invitational. He is ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division I track and field, fifth in the U.S. (professional and collegiate) and No. 11 in the world with his school record and MVC record of 6.59 in the 60 meter dash.
Rus, Phillips and Fountain are all ranked in the top-eight in the Valley currently, with Rus sitting in the top-three. The senior has had a strong indoor season so far, running the third fastest time in school history (7.91) at the Mark Messersmith Invitational.
The Panthers will take a full squad to the Iowa State Classic after have a lot of success at the meet last season. UNI continues to look to excel and grab personal-bests this season with the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships just around the corner, Feb. 25-26.
