UNI Swimming Starts Season off Strong

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri-- The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming team made a splash in the pool today at the Missouri State Invitational. The Panthers placed in 12 of 16 events.
Freshman Katie Taylor made her impact in the pool, swimming into the top 8 of 4 events. Taylor swam four minutes, thirty-two seconds and 73 hundredths of a second in the 400 IM for a fifth place finish. Taylor's second fifth place finish was in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:08.64. One more fifth place finish was in store for Taylor in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 57.22. Taylor had a sixth place finish in the 200 backstroke, with a time of 2:04.33.
Molly Lembezeder also had top 8 finishes. Lembezeder swam a 24.31 in the 50 freestyle for a fifth place finish. Lembezeder nabbed seventh place in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 53.29.
Senior Veronica Herrmann grabbed sixth place in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:06.78. Herrmann nabbed seventh place in the 200 breaststroke, swimming in at 2:25.25.
Rachel Siebenaller had a seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle, swimming a 1:58.39. Siebenaller would grab seventh place again in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:15.55.
Stephanie Jackson grabbed seventh place in the 200 butterfly, with a time of 2:13.32.
Crystal Florman grabbed seventh place in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 59.18.
Moriah Ross made her debut for the Panthers in today's meet, competing in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Ross had a time of 1:05.56 in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 2:21.49 in the 200 breaststroke.
Florman had a strong showings in the 50 and 100 freestyles, with times of 24.50 and 53.70 respectively.
Senior Aftin Phyfe helped the Panthers in a variety of events. Phyfe swam a 2:11.87 in the 200 backstroke. Phyfe also competed in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.98 and in the 200 freestyle, swimming a 1:59.93.
Jackson also competed in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.77. Jackson swam a 4:41.93 in the 400 IM to round out her individual competition.
Madison Rinaldi swam a 1:00.68 in the 100 backstroke.
In the 400 medley relay, Taylor, Herrmann, Jackson and Lembezeder swam a 3:57.37. Florman and Lembezeder would team up with Siebenaller and Phyfe to swim a 3:34.49 in the 400 freestyle relay.
The 400 freestyle team would team up again in the 200 freestyle relay, with a time of 1:39.16. Florman and Lembezeder would team up with Taylor and Ross in the 200 medley relay, swimming a 1:46.76.
"We started off well. (The) results don't paint a picture of what we can do," remarked head coach Doug Humphrey. "Ross and Taylor had great debuts for the Panthers."
