COLUMBIA, Mo. — UNI senior Caleb Shumaker made history on Friday morning for the Panther cross country team as he shattered a 23-year-old program record in the men's eight-kilometer race at the Gans Creek Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri.
Shumaker's record-breaking performance was just the tip of a successful race day for Northern Iowa, which also saw a pair of top ten all-time marks ran in the women's six-kilometer race, as well as multiple new career-best times.
The Panther men finished with a 31st place team finish, while the Panther women placed 14th. Stanford won the team titles in both events.
Shumaker led the UNI men with a 60th place individual finish in a field of over 300 athletes, clocking a career-best time of 24:15, breaking the program's all-time record by five seconds held by both Balazs Csillag (2001) and Velibor Radojevic (2003).
Following Shumaker in the men's 8K was Carson Owens in 113rd place in a new career-best time of 24:42. After making his collegiate debut two weeks ago, Jack Bergman crossed the finish line in a new career-best time (25:28) and a 203rd place finish. Recording a 237th place finish and a time of 25:44 was Chase Lauman, followed by Brady Griebel in 266th, clocking a time of 26:10. Behind them were Levi Hill with a new career-best time (26:13) and Micah Rees (26:15), finishing in 271st and 273rd respectively. Setting another career-best time was Caleb Kass (26:19) and a finishing mark of 281st. Josh Gormley beat out his previous 8K time with a 26:47 and a 294th place finish and rounding out the Panthers was Drew Dombrosky in 303rd and a time of 27:00.
On the women's side, Emma Hoins clocked a 56th place finish and a time of 21:11, the sixth-fastest mark in school history, with Melody Ochana finishing in 75th with a time of 21:24, the tenth-fastest time in UNI history.
Behind Hoins and Ochana in the 6K was Amelia Hill, who set a new career-best time of 21:24 and crossing the finish line in 109th place. Eden Mueller took 131st place and finished in a career-best time of 21:54, followed by Leah Klapatasukas in 178th place in 22:21, for another new career-best time. Brooke O'Brien crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 22:36 and a 202nd place finish. Clocking another career-best time was Clare Wright (22:56), finishing in 234th place, followed by Lauren Klein in 254th place and a career-best finishing time of 23:08.
