UNI cross country: Panther women place second, men third at Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Ill. — The UNI cross country team put on a strong showing late Friday afternoon competing at Illinois State University's Redbird Invite at D.A. Weibring Golf Course, setting multiple new career-best times with top-three team finishes in both events.
Northern Iowa finished with an impressive second-place in the women's team standings, while the Panther men placed third. Illinois State won the team title in both events.
Emma Hoins led the Panthers in the women's six-kilometer race with a runner-up finish individually in a career-best time of 21:35. Following her with a seventh-place finish was Amelia Hill (22:03) and Melody Ochana in ninth-place with a time of 22:18. Crossing the finish line with a career-best time of 22:24 was Eden Mueller in 12th place, with Leah Klapatasukas in 14th place (22:34). Rounding out the top-20 was Brooke O'Brien in a career-best time of 22:55. Clare Wright recorded a time of 23:12 and a 23rd place finish and rounding out the Panther women was Lauren Klein in 34th place and a career-best time (23:34).
Caleb Shumaker led the men's field for the Panthers in the first eight-kilometer race of the season and finished in a career-best time of 24:38, crossing the finish line in fifth-place. Carson Owens took home 11th place after clocking a career-best mark of 25:02, while Micah Rees rounded out the top-20 in his collegiate debut in 25:33. Jack Bergman finished in 26th (26:08), followed closely behind by Levi Hill in 29th (26:14), with Caleb Kass finishing with a career-best time in 38th place (26:42). Drew Dombrosky meanwhile took 39th place in 26:46, as Josh Gormley rounded out the Panther men in 49th place (27:12).
UP NEXT
The Panthers will return to the course on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, hosted by the University of Missouri. The competition will begin at 8 a.m CT.
