UNI Softball Splits MVC Opening Doubleheader

PEORIA, Illinois – The Panthers opened conference play with a split of their Sunday doubleheader, winning the first game against the Bradley Braves, 9-6, before dropping the second game, 7-4.
Northern Iowa vs. Bradley Braves | Final Score – W, 9-6
Brooke Craig got the start in the opening game of the MVC slate for the Panthers, holding the Braves to no runs over the first six innings of the game. Craig hit a wall in the seventh inning, allowing three runs to cross the plate before coach Ryan Jacobs brought in Emma Olejniczak to pitch.
Olejniczak did not see much success in her limited amount of work, walking a runner and giving up a two-run double before being pulled out of the game. Craig was brought back into pitch, and salvaged a win by recording two outs after returning to the mound.
Craig got her eighth win of the season, while striking out four batters. Craig allowed four total runs in the game, however, only two of those runs were earned.
Seven different UNI batters recorded a hit in the first game of the doubleheader, and all offensive starters reached base. Sammey Bunch and Kennedy Bailey both recorded two RBIs, while Brittney Roby achieved another multi-hit game.
Jaclyn Spencer and Brittney Krodinger both recorded an RBI single in the first inning, to give UNI the early lead. A second inning triple by Bunch brought in two more runners, which was her first of two triples on the day.
An error in the top of the seventh inning brought home three more Panthers, as the Braves' center fielder dropped the ball of the bat of Roby. Those three runs proved to be important, as the Braves scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Northern Iowa vs. Bradley Braves | Final Score – L, 7-4
UNI gained the early lead in game two of the doubleheader, Sunday, scoring the first four runs of the game. The offense cooled off however, as they went the final four innings without tallying a run.
Spencer pitched three solid innings in her start, before struggling in the fourth inning. Through three innings, Spencer allowed only one earned run. The sophomore lefty was not able to get an out in the fourth, and allowed four runs in the inning before leaving the game. Spencer struck out just one batter, which was her lowest strikeout total in a game this season where she pitched at least two innings.
Craig and Courtney Krodinger both came on in relief in the game, with Craig pitching two and two-thirds in the game and allowing one earned run, and C. Krodinger retiring her one batter faced.
The UNI offense looked sluggish in the game, finishing with as many walks (5) as they did base hits (5). The Panthers were able to capitalize on early struggles by the Braves' pitching staff, but when Bradley turned to Jackson in relief, UNI was unable to find any consistency with the bats.
Bunch added onto her team-leading (23) RBIs in the game, when she walked in a runner with the bases-loaded in the second inning. Of UNI's four runs in the second game, only one came home to score on a base hit.
