EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team split a pair of games in their doubleheader with Evansville on Friday afternoon. The Panthers (23-8, 3-2 MVC) plated five runs in the final inning to take game one, 6-0, before falling in game two 6-1.
Game one proved to be a pitcher's duel as UNI's Chelsea Ross and UE's Amanda Blankenship stifled batters for the opening five innings, allowing a combined five hits during the span. Ross finished the game allowing just five hits while striking out seven. The senior has not allowed Evansville to score a run on her since the third inning of a 10-2 win over the Aces in 2014.
Micalla Rettinger broke the scoreless tie as she recorded her 13th RBI of the season in the top of the sixth inning, driving in Anna Varriano from second base for the first run of the game.
UNI extended their lead in their final plate appearance in the seventh, plating five runs on three hits to grab a six run advantage. Courtney Krodinger drove in the first run of the inning, laying down a textbook bunt to squeeze Lock in from third. Anna Varriano added to the lead the next at-bat with her second home run of the season, sending a three-run shot over the wall in left center field. Rettinger added the final run of the inning on a solo shot to right center, her first of the season to bring the final score to 6-0.
Ross accounted for the lone Panther run in game two, smashing a solo shot over the wall in center field for her sixth of the year in the opening inning.
Evansville answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 3-1 run lead on two hits with two outs in the frame. The Aces added to their lead in the third, scoring on a RBI single before plating the second run of the inning via a UNI error to go ahead 5-1. The home team added one more in the sixth for the final run of the afternoon.
Bailey Lange entered the game in relief of Alyssa Buchanan in the fourth inning, striking out a career-high six batters while surrendering one run in three innings of work.
The Panthers and the Aces will square off in the series-deciding game three tomorrow beginning at noon.
