Panthers Celebrate Senior Day, Fall to Cyclones

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming and diving team celebrated senior day today in the Glen F. Henry Pool against in-state rival, Iowa State. The Panthers fell to the Cyclones, 177-122.
UNI grabbed four first-place finishes and qualified its second diver for the Zone D Diving Championships, the qualifier for the national tournament.
The Panthers kicked off the meet with a win in the first event. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Madison Rinaldi, Veronica Herrmann, Crystal Florman and Molly Lembezeder swam a 1:47.75, edging out Iowa State, which had a time of 1:47.81.
Lembezeder came back to win two more individual events. She edged out her competition in the 50 freestyle, with a time of 24.19. She also won the 100 freestyle, with a time of 52.32.
Rachel Siebenaller edged out her competition in the 500 freestyle, swimming a time of 5:12.50.
Allie Bey joined teammate Sarah Kemp in qualifing for the Zone "D" Diving Championships today. It will be Bey's third consecutive appearance in the championships. Bey dived a 260.05 in the 1-meter dive. Kemp and Hannah Brummel took third and fourth in the 1-meter dives, with scores of 245.77 and 220.34. Bey scored 272.55 in the 3-meter dive, with Kemp following her at 263.70.
The Panthers were runner-ups in three swimming events. Taylor Ostrowski nabbed second place in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 59.93.
Lembezeder, Florman, Autumn Roepsch and Aftin Phyfe narrowly missed first place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.26.
Sierra Sachtjen nabbed second place ahead of Rinaldi in the 200 backstroke, with a time of 2:09.49.
Herrmann was just shy of second place in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:25.49.
Siebenaller nabbed third place in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:56.66.
The 1,000 freestyle saw action from Panthers Maya Appleton and Meredith Gorman. Appleton swam a time of swam 11:18.80, and Gorman had a season best time of 11:18.82.
"We were competitive. The score doesn't dictate how competitive we were," said coach Doug Humphrey. "I'm proud of what our seniors have been able to accomplish. They could have listened to the past, but instead they chose to listen to me and have helped our program become what it is today."
