CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI track and field team will get its final tuneup before next month's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Championships this Friday as the Panthers return to Iowa City for the Iowa Open.
Competition is scheduled to begin with field events at 11 a.m. CT at the Iowa Indoor Track Building and Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, followed by running events at 1 p.m. CT. Live results can be followed through Wayzata Timing.
Teams expected to compete alongside the Panthers in Iowa City this Friday include Coe, Drake, Heartland Community College, Iowa, Iowa State and Judson.
Northern Iowa heads into the corridor with top marks in eight events among MVC teams:
- Drew Bartels - Men's 60m Hurdles
- Josey Dunbar - Women's Long Jump
- Katie Fare - Women's Shot Put
- Tye Hardin - Men's High Jump
- Spencer Kessel - Men's Shot Put
- Parker Kiewiet - Men's 400m
- Carter Morton - Men's Long Jump & Heptathlon
Additionally, the Panthers boast four athletes who rank in the top-30 in the NCAA in their respective events:
- Carter Morton - Heptathlon (8th)
- Katie Fare - Women's Shot Put (22nd)
- Spencer Kessel - Men's Shot Put (27th)
- Brendan Safley - Men's Pole Vault (27th)

UNI returns to action after a strong performance at the Wisconsin Windy City Classic in Chicago last weekend, led by a first-place finish by Sebastian Swistak in the men's shot with a new career-best throw of 17.51 meters, while David Russell followed in second with a career-best mark (17.13m). Dunbar also set a new season-best mark in the women's long jump (5.84m), as did Eva Van De Mortel in the women's 60-meter dash (7.59).
In the mid-distance races, Chase Knoche clocked a season-best time of 1:48.70 in the men's 800-meter invite, as the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Zach Fall, Luke Meyers, Knoche and Drake Hanson posted the Panthers' top time of the season in 3:11.62. Fare, who on Tuesday was named the MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this year and second consecutive week, finished second in the shot put (16.65m).Â
