UNI track and field: Moreland sets new school high jump record at Iowa Open

IOWA CITY, Iowa --- Josie Moreland broke a 43-year-old school record for the women's high jump on Friday afternoon as the UNI track and field team competed in its final tuneup meet prior to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Championships on Friday at the Iowa Open.
The Panthers racked up nine first-place finishes with career and season-best performances in their third trip to Iowa City this winter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A slew of Panthers competed in the women's high jump with Moreland, who cleared 1.76 meters, set a new indoor program record and surpassing Jeanette Brown's 1982 record. Rylie Todd followed in second place (1.70m), followed by Chloe Largent in third (1.65m), Soren Maricle in fourth with a season-best mark (1.65m), Joey Perry in seventh (1.60m) and Silvana Kabolo in eighth (1.55m), tying her personal best.
Alivia Silvestri earned a first-place finish in the women's pole vault clearing 3.65 meters, as Isabelle Cox was able to tie her season best in the event as she vaulted three meters for a fourth-place finish. Katie Fare collected another first-place finish in the women's shot put as she threw for 17.40 meters, while Jorie Hanenburg wasn't far behind as she finished sixth with her new personal best throw of 13.74 meters.
Colin Buch started off the field events for the Panther men by setting a new personal best in the men's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.83 seconds, earning him an eleventh-place finish. Jake Bosch took fourth in the men's 600 meters, setting a new lifetime best for the event in 1:19.72.
On the women's side, Mary Kelly won the women's 800-meter run (2:13.09), with Kendra Nissen coming in second (2:13.27) and Anna Van Kooten in fifth (2:15.32). Darci Wiseman placed second in the 400 meters in 58.07, setting a new career-best time, while three athletes set new season-best marks in the women's 200-meter dash, led by Giada Grimes in second (25.78), Anna Winterrowd in fourth (25.78) and Kanijah Angel in sixth (25.89).
Leah Klapatauskas came in second in the women's mile (5:01.28) with both Eden Mueller (5:09.08) and Brooke O'Brien (5:09.42) setting new career-best times in ninth and tenth places respectively. Kanijah Angel, Grimes and Winterrowd went one-two-three in the women's 60-meter dash, all setting new career-best times.
Other top finishes for the Panthers included Brendan Safley finishing first in the men's pole vault (5.30m) with Davis Brogan (unattached) placing fourth after clearing 3.90 meters. Zack Butcher captured the men's long jump crown after a 7.28-meter leap with Ethan Peters taking fourth (6.77m), while Kaiden Quandahl, competing unattached, won the men's triple jump (11.98m). Five Panthers finished in the top-eight in the women's long jump, led by a second-place effort from Katy Stephens (5.66m). Josey Dunbar followed Stephens in third (5.63m), followed by Makayla Crannell in fourth (5.56m), Joey Perry in sixth (5.38m), Silvana Kabolo in eighth (5.13m) and Katy Hand in ninth (5.00m).
Back on the track, Derek Woods won the men's 800-meter run in 1:53.41 with Micaiah Ellis finishing less than a half second behind in second (1:53.88), while Levi Hill took third in the men's 3,000-meter run (8:49.19) and Jerome Jessup third in the 60-meter dash (6.84). Paige Paup took fourth in the women's 60-meter hurdles (9.27) with Wiseman following in sixth (9.36).
