UNI track and field shines at Larry Wieczorek Invitational

Panthers sweep up 12 titles in second trip to Iowa City this season. UNI visits Wartburg and Kansas State next weekend.
IOWA CITY, Iowa --- The UNI track and field team turned their second trip to Iowa City this season into a productive one as the Panthers racked up 12 event wins on Friday and Saturday competing at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational.
Facing off against athletes from Iowa, Minnesota State, Illinois State, Bradley, Garage Strength, Augustana, Madonna and Indian Hills Community College, Northern Iowa clocked multiple season and career-best in its third meet of the indoor season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Katie Fare opened the two-day competition in style for the Panthers by winning the women's weight throw for the second time this season with a winning toss of 16.12 meters. Breanna Hackman (13.77m) and Jorie Hanenburg (13.35m) each finished third and fourth respectively, while Kamari Brown, who threw unattached, placed fifth (13.08m). On the men's side, three Panthers finished in the top five, led by Spencer Kessel in second place with a throw of 18.70 meters. Carson Lineau (18.10m) and Sebastian Swistak (17.39m) broke their personal records finishing in third and fourth respectively.
Rylie Todd and Josie Moreland finished as co-champions in the women's high jump with leaps of 1.70 meters. Chloe Largent took home fourth place with a 1.60-meter jump with Soren Maricle taking fifth also with a 1.60-meter jump. Carter Morton took care of business winning the men's high jump by leaping over 2.05 meters. Tye Hardin took the bronze after clearing 1.95 meters with Brody Lovell taking fifth (1.85m).
Josey Dunbar collected gold in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.81 meters, while Ethan Peters earned himself a fourth-place finish on the men's long jump (6.89m).
The women's 3,000m premier was led by Emma Hoins as she took home first place with a winning time of 9:34.33, as Amelia Hill, who competed unattached, placed third (9:36.06). Eden Mueller meanwhile earned a second-place finish in the women's unseeded 3,000-meter run in 10:03.64.
Anna Van Kooten finished in first place for the women's 600-meter dash with a time of 1:37.17, while Joey Perry collected her own first-place finish in the women's 200 meters in 25.05 seconds. In the men's 200m, Zach Butcher sprinted his way to a first-place result in a speedy 21.95 second finish to close out the first day of competition.
Kaylin Lacher (5:00.77) and Leah Klapatauskas (5:01.03) opened Saturday's action finishing in first and second place respectively in the women's mile, while Caleb Shumaker (4:17.74) and Levi Hill (4:18.03) went 2-3 in the men's mile. Competing unattached, Caleb Kass earns a fifth place finish in 4:29.27.
Maya Williams (56.93), Jersey Jones (57.21), and Carlie Jo Fusco (57.29) swept the top three spots on the podium in the women's 400-meter dash, marking Williams' second event win of the season. The Panther men also swept first, second and third place in the men's 400 meters, as Zach Fall topped the field in 48.67 seconds, followed by Luke Meyers (49.11) and Derek Woods (49.62). Parker Kiewiet meanwhile took fifth in the men's 600-meter dash premier (1:20.62) in his second meet of the season.
In the men's 800-meter premier run, Chase Knoche clocked a 1:49.24 to finish in first, the 13th fastest time in Division I this season. Drake Hanson followed in second place with a season-best time of 1:50.73 and Micaiah Ellis earning fifth (1:52.43). In the men's unseeded 800 meters, Brayden Picken placed fourth (1:55.95) with Ty Getz (unattached) earning fifth place (1:57.33). Kendra Nissen (2:14.21) and Mary Kelly (2:14.32) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the women's 800-meter premier run.
Brendan Safley earned second place in the men's pole vault, clearing 5.35 meters with Carter Morton taking fourth (4.90m) and Carter Pheifer in fifth (4.75m). Kait McHale meanwhile picked up a second place finish in women's pole vault (3.75m).
Hunter Manock set a new personal best time in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.00 seconds, placing fifth in the finals, while the team of Giada Grimes, Van Kooten, Makayla Crannell and Katy Hand collected a first-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:58.03. Meyers, Fall, Kiewiet and Knoche took fourth in the 4x400-meter relay for the Panthers (3:12.73).

UNI returns to action next weekend for a double dose of competition, with athletes set to compete next Friday and Saturday at the Wartburg Indoor Select in Waverly, as well as the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, hosted by Kansas State in Manhattan.
