CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI track and field hits the road for another weekend of multi-meet action, returning to Waverly's Walston-Hoover Stadium for the Wartburg Outdoor Select, as well as the Arkansas Spring Invitational in Fayetteville on Saturday.
Competition at Wartburg will begin at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, with Saturday's action beginning at 9 a.m CT. The one-day competition at Arkansas will commence at 9:30 a.m. CT at John McDonnell Field.
Northern Iowa opened its spring season with a bang last weekend with 15 first-place finishes at Wartburg's Good Friday Challenge, with additional athletes competing at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational.
At the Good Friday Challenge, Caleb Shumaker started the afternoon for the purple and gold with a win in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:57.06. Running the women's 100-meter hurdles, Paige Kisley earned her first victory of the outdoor season in a winning time of 14.55. Jack Sumners won the men's 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.20 for the purple and gold.
The Panthers swept the top-five spots In the women's 100-meter dash with Madelyn Sanda topping the field with a winning time of 11.98 seconds. On the men's side, Jerome Jessup picked up a first-place finish in a time of 10.67. Sophia Jungling secured another first-place finish in the women's 1,500-meter for the Panthers in a personal-best time of 4:32.20.
Picking up more first-place finishes on the weekend, Jill Bennett took home the women's 400-meter title in a time of 57.96. Carlie Jo Fusco earned first place in the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.21. Sweeping overall in the 200-meter dash, Sanda finished in first place with a time of 25.12, while Tinashe Chigudu won the men's 200-meter, competing unattached in a time of 21.04.
In the field, Ethan Peters claimed the title in the men's high jump after clearing 1.95 meters. Josey Dunbar won the women's long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.93 meters to record the fourth-best jump in program history. Justice Miller won the men's javelin throw with a personal-best 56.90 meters, while Sebastian Swistak finished in first place in the men's shot put competing unattached with a 16.53-meter toss. In the women's shot put, Katie Fare clinched first place competing unattached with a throw of 16.28 meters.
At the Texas Relays, Brendan Safley placed eighth in the men's pole vault after clearing 5.15 meters. Safley also placed eighth in the pole vault at Texas State with a 5.02-meter vault. Spencer Kessel, also performing at the Texas Relays finished in 12th place with a throw of 17.40-meters for UNI. Katy Stephens took 13th place in the heptathlon at Texas State with 4,647 points, recording career-best markings in three events.
