CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Kicking off another packed weekend of competition, UNI track and field begins the final week of April at America's Athletic Classic, the Drake Relays, beginning Wednesday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Panthers will begin their stint at the 113th running of the Drake Relays with the decathlon and heptathlon running Wednesday and Thursday. Five Panthers are slated to compete in the decathlon, including Carter Morton, who surpassed 7,000 points in his last decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational two weeks ago. Drew Bartels, Zack Butcher, Brody Lovell and Caden Ungs will also compete in the ten-event competition. Lydia Berns-Schweingruber and Katy Stephens will participate in the heptathlon.
On the women's side, Makenna Wilson seeks to continue her recent stretch of success, coming off women's discus and shot put titles at Augustana's Meet of Champions last week. Wilson will also compete in the women's hammer throw.
Fresh off winning the women's 400-meters at Augustana, Emily Vos will look for a second straight sprinting title as she hits the Blue Oval, while Emma Hoins joins the field for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hoin posted the second-fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in program history at the Fighting Illini Challenge earlier this month, and enters the Drake Relays 11 seconds off the school record.
In men's competition, Isaiah Trousil and Tinashe Chigudu prepare for the 100-meter dash on Drake Stadium's historic straightaway. Trousil currently ranks first in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) with a time of 10.16 this season, which is also tied for the 23rd fastest mark in the nation.
Jack Sumners and Brendan Safley look to continue their success after winning titles in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault respectively last Friday at Augustana. Sumners ranks second in the MVC with a time of 14.10 in the sprint hurdles event, while Safley is just one of two vaulters in the conference this season to clear five meters.
Andrew Ferguson and Onal Mitchell join the 400-meter dash field, while Drake Hanson and Chase Knoche go head-to-head in the 800-meters, both having won the event once this season. In the field, Carson Lienau will go to work for the Panthers in the shot put, while Jacob Baier competes in the hammer throw.
