UNI track & field: Panthers punch tickets to four Drake Relay finals

DES MOINES, Iowa — UNI track and field secured spots in four finals with extraordinary speed and some of the program's fastest times on Thursday during the 113th running of the Drake Relays at historic Drake Stadium.

Isaiah Trousil clocked the fastest time in the men's 100-meter dash preliminary heats with a mark of 10.30 seconds with Tinashe Chigudu coming in sixth place (10.53). Both Panthers are slated to run in Saturday's final, scheduled for 1:07 p.m. CT.

Fresh off winning the 110-meter hurdles at Simpson's Kip Janvrin Open, Jack Sumners took second place on the Blue Oval in the prelims with a time of 14.23, setting up an appearance in the finals at 1:28 p.m. CT tomorrow.

Both of UNI's 4x100-meter relay teams advanced to Saturday's finals, as the men's combination of Chigudu, Luke Meyers, Trousil and Deonte Dean clocked the second-fastest time in school history at 39.90 second in its second place finish. The women's team of Jill Bennett, Rylan Santi, Ariana Yaklich and Libby Wedewer placed sixth in 46.09 seconds. Both 4x100-meter relay finals are scheduled for 3:08 p.m. CT on Saturday.

Katie Fare and Makenna Wilson both placed in the top-eight in the women's shot put, with Fare taking third with a throw of 16.33 meters and Wilson in sixth (14.91 meters). Wilson also placed fifth in the discus, notching a best throw of 48.26 meters.

In the triple jump pit, Carter Morton, who claimed the Drake Relays decathlon title on Thursday, placed sixth with a leap of 14.53 meters. Alivia Silvestri also placed sixth in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.52 meters.
