UNI throwers set new career marks at Sooner Invite

NORMAN, Okla. --- A trio of Panthers made the journey south to Oklahoma, competing in the throwing events at the Sooner Invite on Friday and Saturday at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex on the University of Oklahoma campus.
UNI opened competition on Friday in the women's hammer throw, with redshirt junior Mari Shavers showing out with a second place finish, recording a career-best 59.30 meter toss (194' 6") on her third attempt. Shavers' new high-water mark breaks her previous personal best by 0.32 meters and ranks fifth best in UNI history.
Shavers, along with teammates Katie Fare and Makenna Wilson all competed in Friday's shot put, with Fare leading the way in fourth place with a throw of 16.32 meters (53' 6 ½"). Wilson finished in 11th place at 13.75 meters (45' 1 ½''), while Shavers placed 16th (13.15 meters / 43' 1 ¾'').
Wilson and Fare wrapped up competition on Saturday in the discus throw, with both Panthers securing new career-best throwing marks. Finishing in seventh place, Wilson notched a mark of 47.75 meters (156' 8") on her second attempt, besting her previous record by 5.19 meters. Fare's new career-best throw came during her second throw as well at 44.79 meters (146' 11"), surpassing her previous best toss by just over 2 meters to finish in 10th place.
