
UNI track & field: Panthers win five events at Jim Duncan Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa — Just two weeks out from the historic running of the Drake Relays, UNI athletes got an early trip to Drake Stadium on Friday afternoon as the Panther competed in the Jim Duncan Invitational.
In a highly active weekend for UNI track and field athletes across the country, 5 Panthers picked up first place finishes after a competitive day at the historic Blue Oval.
Brendan Safley secured his first victory of the 2023 outdoor season in the men's pole vault, clearing 5.06 meters. The UNI women also found success in the field events with Rylie Todd claiming gold with a high jump with a leap of 1.67 meters, with Katy Stephens finishing close behind in second place (1.67 meters).
On the track, Emily Vos secured her first victory since the 2021 outdoor season with a win in the women's 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 24.59 seconds. Tyler Gray finished in fourth place for UNI in 25.69 seconds.
One week after clinching the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at Illinois, Emma Hoins grabbed gold again, this time with a victory in the women's 5,000-meters in 17:48.19. Mia Rampton followed Hoins in fourth with a mark of 18:23.33.
The Panther women would also earn victory in their final event of the day, as Clare Basala, Liv Freund, Tyler Gray and Amelia Hill won the 4x400-meter relay with a mark of 3:50.21, edging second place Drake by 3.48 seconds.
In the women's pole vault, Isabelle Holtzen and Alivia Silvestri both cleared 3.50 meters, earning a tie for third place, while Jacob Baier took seventh in the men's hammer throw with a career-best toss of 58.01 meters. Colin Buch came in eighth place in the men's javelin with a personal-best at 43.72 meters, while Emma Decker also took eighth place in the women's javelin (31.68 meters).
In the distance races, Sydney Schaffer and Ella Popenhagen secured top-four finishes in the women's mile, as Schaffer took second place with a time of 4:41.8) with Popenhagen in fourth at 4:46.54. Brady Griebel would take fourth in the men's 5,000-meters, recording a time of 15:15.24, while Paige Holub took fifth place in the women's 800-meters (2:18.32).
On the straightaway, Kelly Proesch notched a time of 15.65 in the women's 100-meter hurdles to take second place, while Darci Wiseman took fourth (16.01). Anna Winterrow clinched fourth place in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:04.49), as Bill Mukhtar ran a 55.10 to earn fifth place in the men's race.
Olivia Hubler clocked a time of 12.65 in the women's open 100-meter dash to take fourth place, with Eva Van De Mortel running a career-best mark of 12.69 seconds to earn seventh. In the men's 100-meters, Titus Jackson would take eighth in a time of 11.37 seconds.
UNI closed the afternoon as Micaiah Ellis, Jackson, Chase Knoche and Mukhtar took fourth place in the men's 4x400-meter relay, clocking a final time of 3:18.03.
