CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI track and field prepares for a jam packed weekend of competition as the Panthers send athletes across the midwest and west coast beginning Thursday and running through Saturday.
The action begins on Thursday as Carter Morton competes in his first decathlon of the outdoor season at the Bryan Clay Invitational on the Azusa Pacific University campus in Azusa, California beginning at 1 p.m. CT, and concluding on Friday afternoon. Mid-distance runner Drake Hanson will also head to California to compete in the men's 800-meters, which is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 5:20 p.m. CT.
A group of UNI sprinters will also head to Lawrence for the 100th running of the Kansas Relays at Rock Chalk Park beginning Thursday afternoon. Among the Panthers heading to Kansas will be Isaiah Trousil and Deonte Dean, fresh off impressive races in the men's 200-meter dash at the Fighting Illini Challenge last weekend in Champaign. Trousil took home first place in the event with a time of 20.92 seconds, with Dean taking third at 21.22 with a career-best mark. Jack Sumners will look to continue his hot stretch in the 110-meter hurdles after taking third place at Illinois last weekend with a time of 14.20 seconds, while Onal Mitchell seeks to stay on a roll after recording an outdoor career-best mark of 48.25 seconds in the 400-meters last Saturday.
Heading south, the Panthers will send a trio of throwers in Katie Fare, Makenna Wilson, and Mari Shavers to Oklahoma for the Sooner Invite at the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex in Norman. Fare, who notched a first place finish in the shot put at Illinois, set a new career-best with a 16.58-meter toss, the second-best mark in program history. Wilson narrowly missed a personal-best with a throw of 15.55 meters to finish as runner-up.
The large majority of the Panther roster will stay in-state this Friday with a trip to Des Moines for the Jim Duncan Invitational, beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT at Drake Stadium. Among the collective of athletes heading to Drake will be Emma Hoins, fresh off winning the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at Illinois with a time of 10:34.86, the second fastest time in school history. Chase Knoche, who won the men's 800-meters last weekend in Champaign in 1:50.94, will also compete at Drake Stadium after the first win of his collegiate career.
