MURRAY, Ky. – The Panthers picked up two wins to start the opening weekend of Missouri Valley Conference play against the Murray State Racers.
UNI had contributions up and down the lineup in two wins on Friday afternoon. In both games on a blustery day in Kentucky, the Panthers didn't have a batter with a multi-hit game. While five UNI players had multiple hits on the day, those performances were split between the 4-1 Game 1 win and the 3-0 Game 2 win.
Game 1 | W, 4-1
For three innings it was a pitcher dual between starters Kailyn Packard and Hannah James. Packard picked up five strikeouts in the first three frames before the Panther offense burst the game open. The offense was simmering early with a leadoff single from shortstop Kylee Sanders. UNI didn't find home until the top of the third.
The Panthers had two runners on early as first baseman Daryn Lamprecht and catcher Alexis Pupillo were both walked by James. Center fielder Madison Parks opened the scoring for UNI with a hard double to left center that brought pinch runner Maggie Erpelding. Parks ended up being stranded at second but her RBI kept the Panthers on top for the rest of the game.
UNI doubled its lead in the fourth inning as third baseman Brooke Snider hit a solo home run to left. But the doubled lead didn't last for long as the Racers scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double and a single through the left side. After the run, Packard settled back into the circle to throw three straight strikeouts.
The Panther offense got back to work in the fifth facing a new Murray State pitcher in the circle. Despite a leadoff out, a single and a fielder's choice had Pupillo back in scoring position. Left fielder Mya Dodge then hit a single past second that allowed Pupillo to show off her speed and score UNI's third run of the game.
The defense continued to work its magic in the bottom of the fifth, getting two outs with two Racer runners on to end the inning. The Panthers added their final run of the first game of the doubleheader in the top of the sixth. Pinch hitter Addison McElrath went yard to left for her first home run of the season to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
The sixth ended quickly as UNI took Murray State down in order. A batter got on base in the seventh after being hit by a pitch, but the Panthers stranded her at first. The Racers tried to come back in the final half of the game with a single to left. UNI responded by catching a flyout and having Samantha Heyer come in for the save, striking out the final batter of the first game of the day.
Five different Panthers had hits in their first game against the Racers while four hit for RBIs. Packard was credited with the win, pitching 6.2 innings for six hits, one run, two walks, and throwing nine strikeouts. Heyer picked up her second save of the season by striking out the final batter.
Game 2 | W, 3-0
Heyer returned to the circle for UNI in the second game of the day, pitching all seven innings against Murray State. Outside of a hit early in the first, Heyer didn't allow another through 6.2 innings. The Panthers on the other hand collected eight hits for three runs in game two.
UNI had two innings without a hit, including the first where the lineup went down in order. It was the only inning that took down the Panthers 1-2-3 as they picked up either a hit or a walk in the next six innings.
UNI went up early in the second almost hitting the cycle with a triple, double, and single. Dodge scored the first run after hitting a leadoff triple. A double from Snider through the left side after two outs brought Dodge in to score. Snider then made her way home on the next play as left fielder Faith Standerski singled to center.
The Panthers added their final run of the day in the third. Pupillo picked up UNI's second triple of the game to put herself into scoring position. A walk to Parks after the triple had Panthers at the corners with only one out. Dodge made contact when needed, hitting a sac fly to right, scoring Pupillo at third.
UNI didn't score for the rest of the game but didn't need to with four more hits and nothing allowed to Murray State. In the final five innings the Panther defense took the Racers down in order with 15 putouts while Heyer threw 10 strikeouts.
It was the second game in a row for UNI where the team had a different player connect on every hit. Of the eight players who had a hit in game two, five had hits in the first game of the day. The first four spots in the order, Sanders, Pupillo, Parks, and Dodge, had hits in both games with pinch hitter Addison McElrath being the final batter with two hits on the day.
Dodge, Snider, and Standerski were the only players with RBIs in game two. In the field, Pupillo had the most putouts with 12 while Lamprecht had five. Heyer pitched her sixth complete game allowing only the lone hit and throwing 13 strikeouts.
