MURRAY, Ky. – The Panthers finished off their first MVC series of the season with a bang, putting up 17 runs against the Murray State Racers.
UNI looked to be coming close to breaking a single-game record for most runs scored in their final game against Murray State on Saturday. While the Panthers didn't break their 23-run record, they scored 17 for the first time this season and the first since the 2022 season against the Racers. Four UNI players had multiple hits while seven hitters brought at least one run home in the Panthers' best offensive performance of the season so far.
The UNI pitching staff continued to shine allowing only three hits in seven innings and not throwing a single walk. The efficiency in the circle gave the Panther offense plenty of time to string together 16 hits and score 17 runs through seven innings of play starting in the top of the first. A stand-up double for catcher Alexis Pupillo started the hitting and a single from left fielder Mya Dodge brought her home for run number one.
UNI added another run in the top of the second as second baseman Taylor Hogan and third baseman Brooke Snider hit back-to-back singles. A third single from first baseman Daryn Lamprecht found its way straight up the middle scoring Hogan. Snider and Lamprecht were left on base as the next two Panther batters were put out.
The team's first multi-run inning came in the third when UNI scored two runs to make it a 4-0 game. A leadoff double for center fielder Madison Parks began a string of hits for the Panthers as UNI had two more back-to-back singles from Dodge and designated player Hannah Kelley, whose single to center scored both runners. Kelley would end up out on the play stretching to second but picked up two RBIs in the process.
The Panthers didn't score a run in the fourth but made up for it with two in the top of the fifth. A fielding error put Dodge back on first while Kelley hit her second single of the game, putting runners on first and second. Hogan then connected on her second hit of the day, a double to left that scored Dodge and pinch-runner Makenna Kuper. It was a quiet sixth inning for the UNI but it didn't remain quiet for long.
The Panthers had their best offensive inning of the year in the top of the seventh, scoring 11 runs on five hits with the help of three fielding errors. In the final inning, UNI had three singles, one double, and a fielder's choice before Hogan hit the Panthers' first grand slam of the year. The home run for Hogan was her first of the year and the first grand slam of their career getting the ball just over the fence in left field.
Along with Hogan's grand slam scoring plays for UNI in the seventh included two runs on a fielding error for third base sub Kate Lappe. An unearned run on a fielding error for right fielder Sammy Moss. A throwing error for Lamprecht that scored Lappe. A fielder's choice for Kylee Sanders that scored Moss. And a double for Dodge that scored Sanders two batters before the grand slam.
Hogan led all batters with her performance on Saturday afternoon. Hogan picked up four hits, brought in six RBIs, scored three runs, and had three assists on putouts at second base. Pupillo, Dodge, and Kelley also had multiple hits on Saturday with Parks, Snider, and Lamprecht picking up a hit each.
UNI had three different pitchers in the circle on Saturday afternoon. Kailyn Packard started off the day, pitching two innings while allowing two hits and throwing one strikeout. Samantha Heyer pitched most of the game as she was in the circle for 4.2 innings with 10 strikeouts in 16 batters faced. Anna Wischnowski ended the game for the Panthers drawing the final out in one pitch.
