Panther track & field crowns four champions at Iowa Open

UNI athletes notch 28 top-five finishes in final meet before conference championships.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — UNI track and field wrapped up the regular season portion of its 2022-23 indoor schedule on Friday afternoon as the Panthers grabbed 4 first place finishes at the Iowa Open, as well as 28 top-five finishes.
Carter Morton kicked off UNI's day of career performances with a first place finish in the men's high jump with a meet record of 6 feet, 9.5 inches. Brody Lovell came in close behind in third place (6 feet, 0.75 inches), with Caden Ungs in fourth (5 feet, 10.75 inches).
Jack Sumners topped the podium in the men's long jump with a jump of 24 feet, 1.5 inches to set a new meet and career-best, while Drew Bartels came in third, jumping 22 feet, 4.5 inches.
Emily Vos took home first place in the women's 200-meter with a new career-best and meet record time of 24.63 seconds. Tyler Grey ran a 25.69 to finish in fourth place.
For a second straight weekend, Drake Hanson clinched first place in the men's 800-meters, joining his teammates with a new career-best time and meet record of 1:49.88. Jayden Dickson came in second place (1:54.49), while David Holesinger II took fourth place (1:55.93)
Katy Stephens paced the Panthers by finishing in second place in the women's high jump with a career-best of 17 feet, 8 inches, while Makinley Levin placed fourth (16 feet, 5.25 inches) and Amanda Lietz in fifth (16 feet, 2.5 inches).
Three Panthers placed in the top-five in the women's high jump, led by a second place finish from Rylie Todd with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches. Layanna Green and Katy Stephens placed third and fourth respectively with Green notching a new career-best of 5 feet, 5 inches.
The UNI trio of Paige Holub, Ella Popenhagen and Amelia Hill all set new career-best times in the women's 800-meters, with Holub leading the pack in third place (2:15.79). Popenhagen took fourth place (2:18.06) with Hill taking fifth (2:18.50).
In the field, Isabelle Holtzen claimed second place with a pole vault (11 feet, 9.75 inches), while teammates Sydnee Scott and Alivia Silvestri followed in third and fourth place respectively. Scott notched a career-best vault of 11 feet, 9.75 inches, as Silvestri cleared 11 feet, 3.75 inches. Brendan Safley, competing in the men's pole vault unattached, placed second with a 15 feet, one inch mark.
Allison Flanscha threw a career-best in the women's shot put (42-9.5) to take home third, as Breanna Hackman competing as an unattached athlete placed fourth (39-3.25).
Deonte Dean took second place in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.99 seconds, as Onal Mitchell followed behind fifth (22.38). River Patterson took home fourth place in the men's 400-meters (49.61 seconds), while Anna Winterrowd finished in second place in the women's 400. (58.89 seconds). Eva Van De Mortel recorded a fifth place in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.91 seconds.
Caleb Shumaker notched a fourth place finish with a career-best time of 8:44.83 in the men's 3000-meters, while Isabelle Schaffer took second place (10:21.35). Mia Rampton (10:21.35) and Lauren Klein (10:57.89) went back-to-back in fourth and fifth place respectively.
