Panthers Win at Hillenbrand Invitational

GAME 1 | UNI 13, Bryant 5
UNI took a 6-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 13-5 win over the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday.
Freshman Samantha Heyer (2-4) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UNI (4-5). The right-hander went 2.1 shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by junior Emma Valainis, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBIs. Senior Sammey Bunch put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Olivia Brooks also contributed for UNI, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk, and two RBIs.
The Panthers got the scoring started early, first putting runs on the board in the first inning with the game still scoreless. UNI hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring six runs.
The Panthers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Bulldogs cut it to 6-5. The UNI offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Hannah Kelley, which brought the Panthers lead to 10-5.
UNI held Bryant scoreless before building their lead to 11-5 the following inning. The Panthers picked up a run on senior Tianna Drahn's two-out RBI double.
UNI held the Bulldogs scoreless before their offense got back in action the next inning. The Panthers recorded two runs off of Bryant pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Brooks, bringing the score to 13-5 in favor of UNI. The score remained 13-5 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.

An outstanding offensive output was not enough for UNI on Saturday. The Panthers plated seven runs, but could not hold the Long Beach State Beach at bay, and were defeated 8-7.
Freshman Madison Parks (0-1) took the loss in the circle for UNI (4-6). The right-hander went three innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Freshman Samantha Heyer was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.1 innings, surrendering one run on two hits.
Senior Adara Opiola led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 1-for-1 in the ballgame with a double, three walks and two RBIs. Junior Cheyenne Andersen provided a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-1 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Sammey Bunch also contributed, going 2-for-2 for UNI with a triple.
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. UNI scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Opiola.
The Beach then rallied to score four runs and take a 5-3 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the second. UNI pushed across a run on sophomore Hannah Kelley's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Beach.
UNI held the Beach off the scoreboard before rallying to even it up at five in the third.
The Beach busted up the tie and took the lead heading into the seventh inning, when UNI got back on the board. The Panthers scored twice on Andersen's two-run homer, tightening the Long Beach State lead to 8-7. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
