Panther Track and Field Opens MVC Championship Friday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI men's track and field begins its title defense while the Panther women hope to improve on last season's finish starting Friday in the first day of the Missouri Valley Track and Field Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The Panther men took home the title a season ago by the slimmest of margins, topping Illinois State by one point.
This season, UNI enters championship week with top marks in seven different events. The Panther depth is also impressive. The UNI men have multiple athletes in scoring position in the conference standings in 10 different events. The Panthers have five of the top-eight times this season in the 400-meter dash and four of the top seven marks in the shot put.
UNI was picked to win the league in the coaches' pre-championship poll and have the highest rank in the USTFCCCA regional rankings on the men's side.
Evan Long has the top time in the 400-meter dash at 47.23, he is also third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.38. Connor Ham has the best time to date in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.10. Owen Minshall has the top mark in the high jump at 6-feet-10.25 and Isaac Holtz leads the discus with a throw distance of 187-feet-4. He is also in the top-eight in the shot put, hammer throw and the javelin.
The Panthers also have the top times in both the 4x400-meter and the 4x100-meter relays.
The UNI women were picked to finish fourth in the pre-championship poll.
The Panthers have 18 marks that are in the top-eight in the MVC standings. Lyndsie Schinkel leads the way for UNI. She is currently ranked third in the 800-meter run and seventh in the 1,500-meter. Katie Nimrod is third in the 400-meter hurdles and McKayla Cole is third in the 10,000-meter run.
In the field events, Hope Koerperich is ranked second in the javelin, Brooke Lorenz in ranked second in the heptathlon and Alanna Nietert is ranked fourth in the hammer throw.
