Panthers Fall to Salukis in Weekend Series

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI softball team fell to the Salukis of Southern Illinois on Sunday, finishing 0-3 on the weekend.
Northern Iowa vs. Southern Illinois | Final Score – L, 7-5
Emma Olejniczak received the start in the circle for the Panthers, pitching two and two thirds innings, walking two batters while striking out four and surrendered one run.
Erica Oler came in for relief, closed out the third inning and pitched three and one third innings, walked one batter and recorded one strikeout.
Brook Craig entered the game in the top of the seventh inning, recording one strikeout.
The Salukis got on the board first in the second inning and added two runs in the third before the Panthers crossed the plate. Trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning the Panthers exploded at the plate to earn four runs. The Salukis tied the game in the sixth inning after adding two runs and forced extra innings.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the either the Salukis added two runs before the Panthers could reach the plate. The Panthers were unable to respond and move to 22-22 overall and 13-10 in the MVC.
Sammey Bunch finished the day going 1-3 at the plate with one RBI. Bunch drove in Adara Opiola on a ground rule double in the third inning to get the Panthers on the board. Opiola had a productive day at the plate with 2 hits on 4 at bats.
Ashley Chesser finished with one RBI while Olivia Brooks ended 2-4 at the plate and crossed the plate in the four run fifth inning to give the Panthers the lead.
The Panthers finished with nine hits, and one errors while leaving seven runners on base while Southern Illinois finished with twelve hits and one errors leaving ten runners on base.

The Panthers will play a single game against the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa on Tuesday, April 30. The game is scheduled to be played in the Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex, with a 5 p.m. start time.
