ORLANDO, Florida – UNI continued its domination in the Citrus Blossom Invitational, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader over George Washington, 11-3, and Kennesaw State, 8-0.
The Panthers' received quality starts from pitchers Jaclyn Spencer and Emma Olejniczak, and the offense combined for 19 runs in the two games.
Northern Iowa vs. George Washington | Final Score – W, 11-3 (5 inn.)
Spencer got the starting nod for UNI in the opening game of the Panthers' doubleheader, Saturday, against the George Washington Colonials. Spencer continued her early-season hot streak, going five innings and striking out six batters. Spencer's only runs allowed came on a three-run home run by Jenna Cone of the colonials, however, all three runs were unearned. Spencer has won all four of her starts to open the 2018 season and sports a 0.58 ERA through 24 innings of work.
The UNI offense wasted no time setting the tone against the Colonials, scoring five runs in the second inning. Brittney Roby lined a double over the center fielder's head to score Jenny Kohl, and senior Kennedy Bailey followed with a two-run single through the right side. Ashley Chesser and Claire Dudek both drove in runs in the inning as well.
Following a three-run home run by George Washington in the top of the third, the Panthers fired back with another five-run inning in the bottom half of the third. Bailey collected her third RBI on a single to right field, and Courtney Krodinger drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Spencer helped her own cause with a double to left field, scoring all three runners.
Northern Iowa vs. Kennesaw State | Final Score – W, 8-0 (5 inn.)
Freshman Olejniczak continued her run of scoreless innings after shutting out the Owls over five innings. Olejniczak has pitched 12 scoreless innings over two starts and one relief appearance. Against Kennesaw State, Olejniczak struck out three batters, while allowing only four total baserunners in the game. The freshman pitcher is now 2-0 in her first two career starts.
Abby Downs drove in the first run of the game for UNI on a single to left field to score Roby. In the second inning, the Panthers scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to Spencer. Bunch cleared the bases in the fourth inning as she doubled through the left side, collecting three RBIs.
The Panthers scored their eighth run of the ball game in the top of the fifth, on a groundout to second base by Spencer. This allowed for a run-rule to take effect, giving UNI its third consecutive win over a team on the five inning run-rule.
