CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team will travel to Orlando, Florida, to take part in the Citrus Blossom Invitational hosted by Diamond 9 Events at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Panthers, coming off of a 4-1 UNI-Dome Classic, will take on Quinnipiac (11:00 a.m. CT) and Central Florida (1:30 p.m. CT) on Friday. Saturday's matchups for UNI will be George Washington (12:30 p.m. CT) and Kennesaw State (3:00 p.m. CT). The Panthers will close out the tournament with a Sunday doubleheader against Stetson (8:00 a.m. CT) and Bethune-Cookman (10:30 a.m. CT).
Quinnipiac has yet to see the field in the 2018 season. The Bobcats finished 23-27 (9-11 MEAC) in 2017, and were not invited to play in their conference tournament. Quinnipiac struggled on the road in 2017, going 5-16 away from home. The Panthers and Bobcats have never faced each other in program history.
The Knights of Central Florida come into the Citrus Blossom Invitational with a 3-2 record, after opening their season in the Friends of Jaclyn Invitational. In 2017, UCF finished with a 29-23 (11-7 AAC) record before losing 4-2 to East Carolina in the opening round of the AAC Conference Tournament. Friday's game will be the first time the Panthers or Knights have ever played each other.
George Washington will also be opening its season at the Citrus Blossom Invitational. The Colonials went 28-24 (11-12 A10) in 2017, but did not participate in the A10 Conference Tournament. The Panthers have never faced the Colonials in program history.
The Panthers will close out Saturday against the Kennesaw State Bobcats, who enjoyed success in the 2017 season, going 40-20 (11-6 ASUN) and advancing to the third-round of the ASUN Conference Tournament before losing by one run to USC Upstate. Saturday's contest between UNI and KSU will mark the first time the two teams have faced each other in either program's history.
The Stetson Hatters went 26-21 (4-14 ASUN) in 2017, including a 10-1 start to their season before finishing 16-20. Stetson did not participate in the 2017 ASUN Conference Tournament. UNI is tied 1-1 with Stetson in the all-time series history between the two teams.
Bethune-Cookman enters the Citrus Blossom Invitational with a 2-3 record. The Wildcats kicked off their season in the Florida Atlantic Classic. In 2017, the Wildcats went 24-33 (11-4 MEAC) and finished as the runner up in the MEAC Conference Tournament, losing to Florida A&M by one run. The Panthers own a 1-0 record in the all-time series history against the Wildcats.
Following the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational, the Panthers will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take part in the Easton Bama Bash from Feb., 23-25.
