Holtz, Smith Lead UNI to Big Weekend in Brookings

BROOKINGS, South Dakota/AMES, Iowa – After claiming 23 Top-10 finishes on Saturday, the University of Northern Iowa track and field program wrapped up weekend action at the SDSU Indoor Classic and ISU Classic.
The most dominate performance on Saturday came from the men in the SDSU Indoor Classic shot put, as the Panthers claimed half of the Top-10 in the event – including the 1-3 on the leaderboard. Isaac Holtz earned his second shot put win of the season, after throwing a personal best of 59-08.25 to place first. Fellow Panthers Keegan Tritle (2nd, 58-09.25), Kyler Yodts (3rd, 57-00.75), Darius King (6th, 55-11.25) and William Blaser (8th, 55-00.00) represented the rest of Top-10 for UNI.
Holtz wasn't done on the day after capping his stellar SDSU Indoor Classic performance with a seventh-place showing in the weight throw, after earning a mark of 59-00.25. Cameron Cantrall rounded out the UNI Top-10's in field action from Brookings, as the Panther placed seventh in the high jump after recording a jump of 6-04.75.
Jacob Smith led the Panther men on the track, taking first in the 400-meter after a personal-best time of 47.69. Panther teammates Jojo Frost and Corey Hertz placed third and seventh respectively in the 400-meter. The win for Smith in the 400 was his second of the season.
The UNI men earned two Top-10 finishes in distance events, with Seb Gearhart (1:52.94) and Ben Ahlrichs (4:15.69) each earning seventh overall in the 800-meter and mile. The Panther men capped the successful day in the 4x400, as the teams of Sven Van Den Bergh, Jacob Smith, Jojo Frost and Evan Long (3:13.50), along with Connor Blough, Bryce Newcomb, Austin Heitland and Jack Butteris (3:15.98) placed second and third.
On the women's side, Sarah Pate earned the best finish after placing runner-up in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 63-08.75. Teammate Alanna Nietert earned seventh overall in the weight throw, with a mark of 58-02.00. Lauren Beauchamp (11-08.00) claimed fifth overall in the pole vault, while Maddy O'Brien (41-05.75) earned 10th in the shot put to close out the Top-10 finishes in the field.
On the track, the Panther women placed in the Top-10 in three events overall. Maddie Bell (56.54) and Lyndsie Schinkel (2:13.59) each grabbed fifth overall in the 400 and 800 respectively. In the 4x400, the team of Jasmine Blue, Maddie Irmen, Bell and Dianna Slight earned fourth overall with a time of 3:53.48.
At the ISU Classic, reigning MVC Female Track Athlete of the Week Brette Correy placed 10th overall in the 800-meter after clocking a time of 2:07.54.

The Panthers now turn their attention to the Wisconsin Invite next weekend, as UNI travels to Madison on Feb. 17.
