Panthers Fall to Cyclones 188.5-110.5

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming and diving team fell to in-state rival Iowa State, 188.50-110.50.
Molly Lembezeder narrowly grabbed first in the 50 freestyle, timing in at twenty-four seconds and eleven-hundredths of a second. Lembezeder was a full second ahead of the competition in the 100 freestyle, timing in at 52.72.
Katie Taylor led all competitors in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. In the 100 backstroke, Taylor timed in at 56.08. In the 200 backstroke, Taylor swam a 2:00.80. Taylor was three seconds ahead of the competition in the 200 IM, taking first with a time of 2:05.96.
The Panther team of Lembezeder, Crystal Florman, Rachel Siebenaller, and Maya Appleton take first in the 400 freestyle, swimming a time of 3:38.38.
Siebenaller nabbed second place individually in the 200 freestyle, swimming a 1:55.32.
The Panther team of Taylor, Olivia Knowles, Florman and Lembezeder edged out Iowa State for second place in the 200 medley relay, timing in at 1:47.57.
Florman took second in the 100 butterfly, swimming a 58.23. Florman would take third in the 100 freestyle, timing in at 24.38. Â
Kelsey Ostrowski tied for third place in the 200 butterfly, timing in at 2:12.90.
Madison Rinaldi timed in third place in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 59.51.
Kylie Engstrom led the Panthers in the distance races, taking fourth in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:40.25. Jordan McCullough took fifth, timing in at 10:55.78. Engstrom and McCullough would lead the Panthers in the 500 freestyle, timing in at 5:15.26 and 5:17.41 respectively.
Knowles placed for the Panthers in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Knowles swam a 1:09.44 in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:33.11 in the 200.
"It was really good to get back in the pool after the winter break," commented head coach Nick Lakin. "We were able to see girls swim different events and get a better mindset for conference. Today's meet had a lot of close races. We head to Illinois State next week, which will be our first look at an MVC opponent."
In the diving well, Hannah Brummel took third on the 1-meter board, diving a 239.15. Mary Kate Ferlmann nabbed fifth with a dive score of 228.65. Brummel led the Panthers on 3-meter, diving a 253.20 for a personal best. Jayden Lovell had a personal best on 3-meter, diving a 252.85.
The Panthers travel to MVC opponent Illinois State on Jan. 19 for a 5 p.m. meet, before meeting Western Illinois on Jan. 20 for a 2 p.m. meet.
