Panther Softball Takes Doubleheader From Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Panther softball team took both games of a doubleheader against Drake on Tuesday and extended their winning streak to five in a row. UNI took game one, 3-0 and grabbed game two after a hitting spree in the top of the sixth inning, 12-0. UNI improves to 25-15 overall and 13-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Drake falls to 20-24 overall and 3-14 in league play.
GAME ONE
UNI's Jaclyn Spencer (11-6) pitched a five-hit shutout in the opening game of the day.
UNI got some offense going in the third when Macey Wolfe knocked in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Bailey Lange knocked in the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Brittney Roby posted an RBI. The Panthers scored in the seventh on three hits and the benefit of a Drake error.
GAME TWO
Senior Alyssa Buchanan (10-1) took the starting spot on the mound for game two. Buchanan also pitched a shutout and held the Bulldogs to four hits in the 12-0 six-inning win.
UNI kept their momentum from game one and scored in the first inning. Roby drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Macey Wolfe followed with an RBI single to put the Panthers on the board, 1-0.
UNI added another single run in the fourth when Buchanan helped her own cause with an RBI that plated Sammey Bunch to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Brittney Krodinger led off the fifth with a double to left field. Krodinger moved to third on a Roby groundout. Wolfe doubled to center to score Krodinger to increase the margin to three.
The UNI offense exploded in the sixth by adding nine runs on seven hits against the Bulldog pitchers. Buchanan knocked in the first two runs of the inning on a double to right that plated Tianna Drahn and Bunch. Brooke Craig came into the game to run for Buchanan and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Craig slid around a throw at the plate to score another run on a fielder's choice. Adara Opiola drove in two runs on a single to left. Bunch singled to load the bases when Ashley Chesser stepped in to pinch hit and drove in another run for the Panthers. Buchanan reentered the game and ripped a two-run single up the middle to give UNI an 11-0 lead. Drahn scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch that gave UNI a comfortable 12-0 lead.
Next up for the Panthers is a three-game series on the road against Loyola in Chicago. They will have a doubleheader on April 22 at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. with their final match on April 23 at 11 a.m.
