CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Senior right fielder Macey Wolfe fired a two-run home run off the left field scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning to hoist the University of Northern Iowa to a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Bradley Braves on Saturday.
Wolfe's fireball into left field was her fourth home run of the season capped a four-run rally in the seventh and led to the Panthers three-game sweep over Bradley.
UNI (23-15, 11-4 MVC) had a rocky start against Bradley (19-23, 5-10 MVC) who had a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. Starting pitcher Bailey Lange was relieved by Alyssa Buchanan after allowing four runs on six hits in the bottom of the second.
With Anna Varriano on base, Lange came to the plate and slammed a home run over the fence to put two runs on the board for UNI.
Brittney Roby hit a double into left center to lead off the bottom of the third. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Roby was brought home on a Wolfe single. At the end of the third Bradley led UNI, 5-3.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, Sammey Bunch led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Brittney Krodinger came up to bat and slammed a deep shot into left field for a two-run home run that tied the game at 5-5.
Buchanan was able to hold the Braves to only three hits from the third through sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, Jaclyn Spencer came in as relief for Buchanan after allowing two Braves to reach base. The Braves scored all three runs when Stephanie Campos hit a grounder to Sammey Bunch at shortstop, but the ball went through Bunch's legs and went all the way to the left-center wall. Campos was gunned down at third on the play as she stretched the error into an out. Spencer then worked around an infield single and did not allow another run.
Drahn led off for the Panthers in the bottom of the seventh and singled to the shortstop. Brittney Krodinger came up to bat and catapulted another two-run home run into left field off the very first pitch. The Panthers were down by one when Roby singled to left. Wolfe followed up Roby with a blast hit over the left field fence for a game winning two-run home run.
The Panthers won the game 9-8 and took all three games in the series. UNI remains in second place in the MVC standings - one game behind league leader Illinois State.
Next up for the Panthers is a doubleheader against Drake in Des Moines on Tues., April 18, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
