CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program will hit the ground running this week as they open the 2017 outdoor season at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Saturday, March 25.
The meet will take place in Carbondale, Ill. at Southern Illinois, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the field events. Action on the track will begin at 12:30 p.m.
The Panthers are coming off a successful indoor season where UNI had 24 performances that landed in the top-10 all-time at UNI, including two school records from senior Brandon Carnes. UNI had 22 all-conference nods at the MVC Indoor Championships, all of which are eager to get back on the track.
UNI returns 16 student-athletes between the men's and women's programs who earned all-conference at last season's MVC Outdoor Championships. The Panthers are headlined by Carnes, who will look to defend his 100 and 200 meter titles.
Carnes is coming off an indoor season where he became the first athlete in Missouri Valley Conference history to repeat as the 60 and 200 meter indoor champion four consecutive years. He earned second-team All-America at the NCAA Indoor Championships after being named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year.
On the women's side, the Panthers return a pair of all-conference performers in Lindsey Kite and Sarah Pate. Pate finished the 2016 outdoor season with a second place finish in the hammer throw at the outdoor championships while Kite placed third in the 800 meter run. Pate will enter the 2017 outdoor season ranked in the top-five all-time at UNI in hammer and discus throws.
Saturday, both Isaac Holtz and Jake Humpal will make their return to the throwing ring for the Panther men with Holtz looking to defend his MVC outdoor discus title. Holtz was victorious in the discus at the 2016 outdoor championships while Humpal is coming off an indoor season where he scored team points in the indoor shot put.
The Panthers will be traveling 24 men and 27 women to the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Saturday.
