Carnes Makes History At MVC Indoor Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior Brandon Carnes made UNI and Missouri Valley Conference history once again today at the 2017 MVC Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning both the 60 and 200 meter dashes for the fourth consecutive year.
The Bradenton, Fla., native became the first athlete in MVC and school history to win both events four straight years, also earning Most Outstanding Track Athlete honors for the second year in a row. The senior got the day started with a time of 6.60, narrowly missing his PR time of 6.59, to win the 60 meter dash, followed by a 21.30 in the 200 to come away victorious.
Carnes highlighted what was a successful weekend for the Panthers overall. The men's team finished in third place overall while the women's team finished in fifth.
The Panthers got started in the heptathlon with both Alex Duff and Austin Heitland scoring team points for UNI. Duff placed sixth overall with a combined point total of 4,906 for a personal-best while Heitland finished in eighth with a score of 4,645.
The Panthers came away with several point scorers in the jumps today, with Maria Gonzalez placing fourth in the women's high jump, newcomer Xavior Williams placing fifth in the men's high jump and Shawn Koch and Charles Brown both placing in the top-eight in the triple jump. Williams, who is a defensive back on the football team, jumped 6-10.00 in his first meet as a Panther.
In the throws, Isaac Holtz earned all-conference in the men's shot put with a big personal-best of 57-11.75 for fifth all-time, also being named the men's MVC Elite 18 Award for his success on and off the throwing ring. Holtz was joined by Brad Walski and Jake Humpal, who both scored team points in the shot put by finishing fourth and fifth overall. Allison Griffin also scored team points on the women's side, finishing seventh overall with a mark of 46-0.50.
Moving onto the track, Daurice Fountain repeated as an all-conference honoree in the 60 meter hurdles, placing third overall. He finished with a time of 7.99, tying his career-best time that ranks him No. 5 as a Panther.
The Panthers had a trio of point scorers in the 400 meter dashes. Maddie Bell placed sixth in the women's race (56.11) while Corey Hertz (48.97) and Evan Long (51.19) to contribute key team points for the Panthers.
In the middle-distance races, Lyndsie Schinkel came through to earn all-conference in the women's 800 meters, placing third overall with a time of 2:10.50. Luke Johnston also finished in the top-five for the men in the 800, recording a time of 1:54.60 for fourth place.
Ashley Norem and Hannah Truniger both shined for the UNI women in the 3,000 meter run, continuing their all-conference ways from the cross country season onto the track. Norem placed second overall with a time of 9:56.07 while Truniger followed in third with a time of 9:57.72.
Rounding out the meet, the Panther men finished second in the 4X400 meter relay, earning all-conference honors. The team of Hertz, Brett McCalla, Bryce Newcomb and Johnston put up a strong team time of 3:17.28 for the integral team points.
