UNI Track Ready To Run At Musco Twilight

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa track and field program will stay in the state of Iowa this weekend, competing at the Musco Twilight in Iowa City on Saturday, April 23.
The Musco Twilight will feature men's and women's teams from Iowa, Iowa Central, Iowa State, Wisconsin and the women's team from Minnesota. The Panthers have just three meets left in the regular season before they head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the MVC Championships, May 13-15.
The Panthers will also be sending junior Brandon Carnes south to the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. to compete against some of the best sprinters in the country. The meet takes place on Friday, April 22, with the 100 meter dash starting at 2:25 p.m. and the 200 dash beginning at 5 p.m.
The Bradenton, Fla. native jumped up in the NCAA and NCAA West rankings last weekend with his top times at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia, Mo. He turned in the two fastest times in the MVC, ranking him No. 6 in the West in the 100 dash with a time of 10.27 and No. 17 in the 200 with a time of 20.86, earning him MVC Track Athlete of the Week.
Along with Carnes' performances, the Panthers' performance at the Tom Botts Invite was highlighted by senior throws star Justin Baker's two school records. The Sioux City, Iowa native set UNI records in both the hammer throw and the shot put, posting top-10 marks in the NCAA West Region.
He started the meet in the hammer throw, breaking his own personal-best and school record with a mark of 212-02.00 for the win, pushing himself into first in the MVC and No. 7 in the West. He followed it up with a key career-best throw in the shot put of 62-08.75, moving him into No. 5 in the West Region. Both marks also moved Baker into the top-30 in the entire country.
Shawn Koch also moved up in the rankings heading into the Musco Twilight after his top-performance at the Tom Botts Invite. He went for a personal-best of 50-07.50 in the triple jump for the win, putting himself first in the conference, No. 19 in the NCAA West and No. 4 all-time as a Panther.
On the track, senior Paige Knodle continued to push herself higher in the national and West Region rankings, running a time of 13.27 in the 100 meter hurdles to win the event for the third time this season. Not only did it put her at the top of the Valley, but it ranked her No. 11 in the West.
The Panthers currently have eight student-athletes ranked in the NCAA West top-48 in 11 different events heading into the Musco Twilight. Athlete must be ranked in the top-48 to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in Lawrence, Kan. May 26-28.
