TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team won their seventh straight game on Saturday, defeating Michigan State 10-4 before falling to No. 17 Arizona State in the nightcap, 3-1. The Panthers (7-3) had three-RBI performances from seniors Micalla Rettinger and Chelsea Ross in their second win of the weekend against the Spartans in game one.
After falling one run behind Michigan State in game one, the Panthers bounced back in the second inning to retake the lead, which they would never fully surrender for the remainder of the contest.
Rettinger recorded her first RBI of the contest in the bottom of the first, driving in Brittany Krodinger with a double. Ross followed suit with a RBI single to score Rettinger from second. Later in the inning, Courtney Krodinger snuck one down the third base line to score Ross from second and put UNI ahead 3-1 after one complete.
Rettinger tallied her second RBI in the third inning after MSU tied things at 3-3, scoring Samantha Olson to take a one run lead. The senior outfielder led off the fourth inning with a walk, one of five lead off walks for the Panthers in the contest, and subsequently stole second to move into scoring position. Caitlin Wnek moved Rettinger over to third before Kristin Lock laid down a textbook squeeze bunt to help UNI grab a 5-3 lead.
Anna Varriano began the bottom of the fifth with a single followed by an Olson walk. Ross recorded her second and third RBI of the contest two batters later via a two RBI single. The senior came through in the circle for the Panthers in the following half inning, striking out MSU's Sarah Gutknecht to strand runners on second and third, but not before the Spartans tightened the gap with UNI ahead, 7-4. Ross tossed a complete game for UNI while striking out four and allowing just one earned run.
Rettinger recorded her third RBI at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Macey Wolfe from third. She finished the game 2-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. After being called in to pinch hit, Alyssa Buchanan singled to drive in two runs and bring the final score to 10-4.
In game two, Arizona State jumped out to an early one run lead with a home run by Chelsea Gonzales in the bottom of the first inning before adding two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Wolfe recorded her first home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, sending a shot over the center field wall to bring UNI within two runs. The Panthers looked to extend the contest after Brittany Krodinger walked, but could not as they fell by a final score of 3-1.
The Panthers will wrap up play at the Littlewood Classic tomorrow when they take on Memphis at 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. central time.
