UNI Wraps Up Littlewood Classic Play with Win Over Memphis, 5-2

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team wrapped up play at the Littlewood Classic on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Memphis. The Panthers (8-3) finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, also earning wins over Montana and Michigan State twice.
The Panthers had a chance to jump on the Tigers in their opening offensive series, loading the bases before back-to-back outs at the plate ended UNI's scoring opportunity.
UNI needed back-to-back strikeouts from Ross in the top of the second inning to halt Memphis' scoring chances with a runner on third with no outs. Ross finished with the game with nine strikeouts, including two in the final inning to halt Memphis' with the game-tying run at the plate.
Samantha Olson singled down the left line in the infield to open up the bottom of the second inning before Kennedy Bailey walked to put two on for Courtney Krodinger. Krodinger singled and Olson and Bailey scored on a throwing error by Memphis' in an attempt to toss her out at first base.
Ross recorded first RBI of the day in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Rettinger from second base to put UNI ahead 3-0. Bailey tallied a RBI double to score pinch runner Samantha Nicholson to give the Panthers a four run lead.
After being replaced in the circle by Bailey Lange in the top of the fourth, Ross re-entered with the bases loaded, getting the Tiger batter to groundout for the third out of the inning after Rettinger saved a run with a perfect throw to Anna Varriano at the plate for the second out.
Rettinger led off the following half inning with a single before advancing to third via a stolen base and wild pitch. Ross tallied her team-leading 15 RBI, scoring Rettinger on a single to put the Panthers up 5-2.
UNI will continue non-conference tournament play on Friday when they travel to Oxford, Miss. to take on UT-San Antonio at 11 a.m.
