Panthers Propel Two Athletes Into Quarterfinals

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Northern Iowa track and field team participated in the first day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round today, advancing two athletes to the quarterfinals in their respective races.
Alex Wilson opened the day on the track for the Panthers in the 1,500 meters, finishing with the second fastest time in the preliminary race. Her time of 4:21.13 and second place finish in her heat automatically qualified her for Saturday's quarterfinals.
Brandon Carnes ran a 10.24 in his heat of the men's 100 meter dash, also grabbing an automatic qualifying spot. The sophomore's time earned him a third place finish in his heat, securing a spot in Friday's quarterfinal race.
UNI had a pair of competitors in the men's long jump, with both Weston Riesselman and Shawn Koch finishing in the top-half of their flights. Riesselman put up a solid mark of 23-5.50 on his third attempt while Koch turned in a leap of 22-9.00.
Darian Samuelson represented UNI well in the 400 meters, running as a Panther for the last time while putting in a solid time of 55.10. Wrapping up the day for the Panthers was Brette Correy in the 800 meter run, finishing with a time of 2:13.63 in the fifth heat.
