Lankelma Captures Singles Crown at Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team wrapped up its action Sunday at the Gopher Invitational with senior Krissy Lankelma capturing the singles crown in the Gopher flight.
Lankelma rallied from a set down to take the Gopher flight championship against North Dakota's Callie Ronkowski. Lankelma dropped the first set, 7-5, but came back to even the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. Lankelma then won the tiebreaker to take the title.
UNI freshman Kylie Haviland placed fourth in the Gopher flight but did not play on Sunday as a result of an injury sustained on Saturday.
Junior transfer Erica Medlin earned a fourth-place finish in the M flight after dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Eastern Michigan's Diana Davitaia.
Freshman Sydney Wolfe tallied a seventh-place finish in the Gopher Flight as well. Wolfe recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over South Dakota State's Beatriz Souza.
Freshman Jordyn Kearney ended her tournament on a winning note as well by taking the ninth-place match with a three-set victory over SDSU's Tracy Haws-Lay, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (5).
Freshman Elvira Lopez posted a ninth-place finish in the Maroon flight with a straight set win over South Dakota's Yamini Reddy, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Astrid Santos also secured a ninth-place tally in the Gold flight by winning her final match of the tournament. Santos scored a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Milwaukee's Hayley Marshall.
UNI's Haviland and Jieke Stroobant placed second overall in the Maroon doubles flight. Kearney and Wolfe took fourth-place honors in the Maroon doubles flight.
The Panther duo of Medlin and Stroobant scored an 8-1 win over Drake's Nell Boyd and Mariel Ante in an extra doubles match.
