Panthers Lose Close Battle to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D.- The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team lost a close meet to South Dakota 153-147 Saturday afternoon in Vermillion. The Panthers had some impressive performances on the day.
Taylor Ostrowski won the 200 meter butterfly in a time of 2:23.72 and set a new pool record at South Dakota. Ostrowski took first in the 100 meter butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:06.48. She wrapped up the day with a victory in 400 meter IM where she went 5:13.50.
Freshman Aftin Phyfe got her first collegiate win in the 200 meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 2:12.12. She placed second in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:01.76. She also took a fourth place finish in the 50 meter freestyle with a 28.39.
Freshman Veronica Herrmann also got her first collegiate victory. She won the 100 meter breaststroke in a time of 1:15.92. She took second in the 200 meter breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:47.38.
Allie Bey got a first place finish for the Panthers as well. She won the 1-meter dive, finishing with 242.99 points. She took the runner up spot in the 3-meter dive with 241.57 points.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Elise Drewsen, Miki Freese, Natalie Johnson, and Phyfe won that event with a time of 4:05.94.
Natalie Johnson finished second in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:08.59. She took the runner up spot in the 200 meter backstroke as well, finishing with a time of 2:29.82. Miki Freese finished second in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 28.06. Freshman Steph Jackson took second in the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:30.46 and second in the 400 IM, as well, with a time of 5:14.58.
The Panthers return to the pool on Friday when they host North Dakota at 3 p.m.
