Cedar Falls, IA -- The UNI women's soccer team fell, 3-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay tonight at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in its first home regular season game. The Panthers out-shot the Phoenix 19-15, but could not climb back from an early 2-0 deficit.
UWGB started the game red-hot scoring the first two goals of the game within the first 5:18. Katie Norman took a cross from Sarah Oligney and placed a high shot that went over the keeper (Heidi O'Mara) at the 2:05 mark. Three minutes later Natalie Brown scored an unassisted goal to put the Phoenix up 2-0.
The Panthers battled back and at the end of the period were even with UWGB with nine shots apiece. At halftime Junior Candice Divoky (Solon, Iowa) led UNI with three shots, two on goal.
UNI controlled the second half offensively taking 10 shots to UWGB's six. The Panthers finally were able to get a shot past Ryann Werner in the 78th minute with a beautiful high-arcing shot by Divoky. UNI had a flurry of seven consecutive shots in the final minutes, with several near-misses, before the final horn.
Divoky led the Panthers with six shots, three on goal, while junior Jillian Carroll (Leawood, Kan.) took four shots, sophomore Aimee Rasmusson (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and freshman Jenna O'Hara (London, Ontario) each had three shots.
"I am happy because we continue to learn defensively so I am not worried," UNI head coach Linda Whitehead said. "When you have a young team and they don't fold when they are down that is huge. We came out strong in the second half and we just need to continue doing what we are doing. Soon enough the breaks will go our way."
UNI falls to 0-4-1 on the season while UWGB improves to 2-2 on the year. The Panthers will be in action this Sunday when they host North Dakota State at 1:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
