Panthers notch first goal of 2026 season on first half goal from Roberts.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI soccer team netted its first goal of the 2026 season, but were unable to protect its second half lead in a 1-1 draw with St. Ambrose on Thursday at the UNI Soccer Field.

For a second straight game, the Panthers set season-high marks in shot attempts (23) and shots on goal (8), snapping a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Fighting Bees would notch 11 shot attempts with five shots on goal in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNI grabbed its first lead of the year in the eighth minute of game action as Abi Roberts scored her first career goal from just outside the goal box, which found the back of the net on a pass from Ella Ubben. Kailey O'Brien, Ubben and Aly Arena maintained the pressure offensively for the Panthers, with each player putting an additional shot on goal each in the first half.

Early in the second half, St. Ambrose would pull even with Veronica Gordon scoring on a pass from Olivia Infante. Despite outshooting the Bees by an 11-6 margin in the final frame, Northern Iowa would be unable to break the tie as the clock expired for the 1-1 draw.

O'Brien finished the afternoon with a team-high six shot attempts, with Roberts recording five shot attempts, as well as two attempts each by Kylie Knief, Ubben, Allison Flies and Allison McCleery. Goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke tallied four saves for the Panthers in net.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

UNI leads the all-time series with a 13-0-1 record, having outscored St. Ambrose by a 35-5 margin in the series.
Ella Ubben notched her first assist of the season and second of her career on Thursday as part of Abi Roberts' first half goal.
