The UNI women's soccer team lost a physical match, 2-1, to North Dakota State today at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Cedar Falls. For the second straight game UNI was able to outshoot its opponent.
Jessica Rodgers put the Bison on the board eight minutes into the game off an assist from Sarah Panzer. The Panthers countered at the 16:07 mark when junior forward Sarah Huffer (Austin, Minn.) dribbled up from the center of the field and placed a long shot in the upper right hand corner of the goal. The goal marked Huffer's first of the season.
The Panthers had the wind at their backs in the first half and they used it to their advantage putting a lot of pressure on the Bison defense. UNI finished with 10 shots in the first half to NDSU's four.
Both teams fought a physical match in the second half. NDSU committed 14 fouls in the second period and finished with 19 for the game. Rodgers broke loose and scored her second goal of the game in the 51st minute to put the Bison up 2-1.
Again, UNI was able to get more shots off then NDSU in the second half, but the Panthers couldn't manage to get any past the keeper Katie Stombaugh.
"We did all of the things that we wanted to do in the game today, especially in the first half," head coach Linda Whitehead stated. "We didn't make any major mistakes, created good opportunities, outshot them and really that is all I can ask of my players. If the ball doesn't go into the back of the net, that is just the way the game goes sometimes."
UNI drops to 0-5-1 on the season while NDSU improves to 2-3-1. The Panthers will be back in action Wednesday night, when they host Loyola. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
