CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI track and field team will return to competition following a rainout last week as the Panthers head to Iowa's two largest cities this weekend for the Jim Duncan Invitational and the Mustang Distance Carnival & Open.
Competition is scheduled to begin at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium in Des Moines and 12:30 p.m. CT on Friday, with action slated for 10 a.m. CT on Saturday at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
UNI will also send a group of multi-event athletes to the west coast to compete in the heptathlon and decathlon during the opening week of the Bryan Clay Invitational in California.
Northern Iowa looks to build on outdoor season opening performances two weeks ago where it claimed nine event titles and 26 career bests at the Central Invitational and the WashU Distance Carnival.
The pole vault was dominated by the purple and gold, with Erica Miner (11' 6 ½") and Sydnee Scott (11' ¾") finishing in first and second places, respectively, while Jacob Yoerger (15' 9 ¼") and Carter Pheifer (14' 3 ½") placed first and tied for third in the men's competition. Brylie Lorence won the women's shot put for UNI (45' 7") with Breanna Hackman following in third (44' 11"). Carson Lineau clinched the men's shot put title with a 58' 4 ½" toss as Tory Wash took fourth (55').
Tyler Sickerson (10.52) and Luke Nevitt (10.59) placed third and fourth in the men's 100-meter dash, while Jessica Kyne (12.21) and Giada Grimes (12.36) took fourth and sixth respectively in the women's 100 meters. Emma Randecker collected a first-place finish in the women's 200m, where she clocked the second-fastest time in school history for the event in 23.58. Parker Kiewiet (21.02), Tinashe Chigudu (21.14), Zach Fall (21.23), and Luke Meyers (21.34) finished first through fourth with Fall setting a career best time.
Carlie Jo Fusco led the way with a first-place showing in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:01.53), with Eden Moore following in third (1:02.83). Gabe Funk, meanwhile, took second in the men's 400-meter hurdles (55.51) as Zach Van Wychen took third with a career-best time of 55.74 seconds.
In St. Louis, Amelia Hill led the UNI women in the women's 5,000-meter run in the 100-woman field with a time of 16:41.92, the third-fastest outdoor mark in program history. Melody Ochana took 29th place in 17:13.51, while Meghan Wheatley finished in 53rd (17:38.37).
In the men's 5,000-meter run, a trio of Panthers all set new career-best times in a crowded 220-man field with Ethan Olds leading UNI with a time of 15:07.10 in 102nd place. Drew Dombrosky followed in 105th place in 15:07.79 with Caleb Kass taking 123rd (15:12.89). Colin Lillie meanwhile took home 16th place in the men's 10,000-meter run with a career-best time of 30:06.10.
