UNI track and field: Five champions crowed at Kip Janvrin Open

INDIANOLA, Iowa --- UNI track and field's loaded competition schedule took the Panthers just south of the Des Moines metro area to Simpson College for this weekend's Kip Janvrin Open at Buxton Stadium.
Northern Iowa captured five individual event titles while recording 19 new career-best marks with a handful of athletes competing at both Simpson, as well as up the road at the Drake Relays.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Maleah Walker kicked off the meet by winning the women's long jump, leaping for 18' 5 ¼", while Tory Wash topped the field to win the men's shot put with a throw of 54' 4". Lauren Kounkel (144' 4"), Emma Joens (136' 5") and Ciara Heffron (134' 9") also placed fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively, in the women's discus with Kounkel setting a new personal-best.
Justin Olson captured the men's hammer throw title on Saturday with a career-best toss of 197' 9". Wash followed in third (187' 5"), Spencer Kessel fourth (187' 2") and Carson Lienau in seventh with a new personal-best (165' 11"). Kileigh Lachacz finished second in the women's hammer (168' 2"), while Kounkel took third (135' 4"). In the women's javelin, Jorie Hanenburg placed second for the Panthers (136' 6") with Heffron in sixth (104' 10") with both athletes notching new career-best marks.
On the track, Paige Paup secured the women's 100-meter hurdles crown, clocking a time of 14.83. Eden Moore followed by securing a second-place finish in the women's 400m hurdles (1:02.31), as Gabe Funk (53.84) and Bill Mukhtar (54.02) finished fourth and sixth in the men's 400-meter hurdles.Â
Kamryn Lande meanwhile took fourth in the women's 400-meter dash in 59.33 seconds, as Brynn Walters finished seventh in the women's 100 meters where she clocked a career-best time of 12.54 seconds. Mary Kelly also took eighth for UNI in the women's 800 meters (2:13.20).
Keegan Steege and Jake Bosch cross the finish line in fifth and seventh place respectively in the men's 800-meter run as they ran in times of 1:52.55 and 1:53.02. Giada Grimes (24.90) collected a second-place finish in the 200m, as Walters (12.54) claimed seventh.Â
In distance competition, Chase Lauman led the way in the men's 1,500m-meter run with a time of 3:52.20, with Ethan Olds following in sixth (3:52.82) and Liza Schaffer taking seventh in the women's mile (11:14.75). Evie Henneberry also finished sixth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:14.75).

UP NEXT
The Panthers return to action next week at the Musco Twilight, hosted by the University of Iowa. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track in Iowa City.
