CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI track and field team shifts from indoor to outdoor competition beginning this week as the Panthers open the outdoor season with select athletes running at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, and others making the trip to Pella for Saturday's Central Invitational.
Competition is scheduled to begin at the WashU Distance Carnival on Friday at 5:15 a.m. CT. Action at Central will commence at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
Northern Iowa opens the outdoor schedule after an impressive indoor season where the Panther men repeated as Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) team champions with four individual conference title winners, while the UNI women took third with three individual champions.Â
UNI also saw eight indoor school records fall during the winter including in the heptathlon, the women's 4x400-meter relay, the men's and women's 5,000 meters, the women's high jump and the women's 200-meter dash. The Panthers concluded the indoor season as the NCAA Championships where Carter Morton earned his second First Team All-American honor after a sixth-place showing in the heptathlon.
Entering the outdoor campaign, Northern Iowa looks to continue its momentum and build on a pair of third-place team finishes at last year's MVC Outdoor Championships. The Panthers return three defending outdoor individual conference champions from a year ago, including Josey Dunbar (women's long jump), Joey Perry (pentathlon) and Carlie Jo Fusco (women's 400m hurdles).
