Head coach Tanya Warren picked up her 350th career victory as UNI’s head coach in a 66-56 victory over the Bulldogs.
DES MOINES, Iowa --- UNI women's basketball got back in the win column in Des Moines with massive performances for its big three. A triple-double from Ryley Goebel, a double-double from Elise Jaeger, and a team-high 19 points from Jenna Twedt pushed the Panthers ahead of the Bulldogs in a matchup that was wire-to-wire for all 40 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams battled through the first five minutes of action in the opening frame, which saw Drake force a UNI timeout after a three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 12-7 lead with four minutes gone in the quarter. A 9-5 run from the Cats over the following four minutes cut the Drake lead to one point at 17-16. UNI's first lead of the game came at the buzzer as Jenna Twedt tossed up a shot that fell, giving the Cats a 23-21 lead after 10 minutes of play.
UNI held the Bulldogs scoreless for just shy of four minutes to open the second quarter, but were only able to score four points of their own. The Panthers held a 27-21 advantage with just over six minutes to play in the first half. An 8-2 run from Drake tied the game at 29 before freshman Abby Tuttle drilled her first three-pointer of the game to stop the bleeding. Jenna Twedt scored the last Panther bucket of the first half, while Drake converted on two attempts as UNI held a one-point lead after 20 minutes of action.
Ryley Goebel led the Panthers at the break with nine points, six rebounds, and three steals. Jenna Twedt scored eight points in the first half, while Elise Jaeger and Abby Tuttle scored seven points. Jaeger brought in five boards in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs came out hot to open the third quarter with a 12-2 run to take an early nine-point lead in the third quarter. The Panthers answered with a 12-1 run of their own, which featured an 8-1 run by Jenna Twedt herself to close the gap and give the Cats a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Panthers dominated the fourth quarter and opened the frame with an 8-2 run out of the gate. After two trips to the free-throw line for Drake, UNI continued to dominate the paint with a six-point run. UNI led the matchup by 10 points with under a minute to play as Drake was forced to foul to extend the contest as long as possible. Jenna Twedt and Elise Jaeger knocked down a combined four free throws before a last-second shot from Drake fell to end the matchup. The Panthers walked out of Des Moines with a 66-56 victory over Drake.
Jenna Twedt led UNI scoring with 19 points, with five coming from the free throw line. Ryley Goebel and Elise Jaeger were the Panthers' other double-digit scorers with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Gobel finished with 14 rebounds and 10 blocks while Jaeger brought in 11 boards.
"It started with our ability to make Aalsma's touches tough," said head coach Tanya Warren when asked about her defense against the Bulldogs. "She's a terrific offensive player. She scored in a variety of ways and you're never going to stop her. We wanted to make sure that her touches were tough and we made her see multiple jerseys when she put it on the floor. I thought our defense was outstanding!"
