CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI track and field team will close out the month of January with a pair of Friday afternoon and evening competitions, sending athletes just north of Cedar Falls to Wartburg's Friday Knight Lights, while a select group of distance runners head to Notre Dame's Meyo Classic in Indiana.
Competition in Waverly will begin at 3 p.m. CT at Hoover Fieldhouse, while the Panthers are scheduled to run at 7:30 p.m. CT at Loftus Sports Center in South Bend.
Northern Iowa returns to action this weekend after a strong showing in Iowa City at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational a week ago, capturing five event titles to go along with 23 new career-bests.
Carter Morton led with a strong performance last Friday night sweeping the men's high jump, tying his career best of 7' 1". Miach Rees showed off his speed as he clocked a new career-best time in the men's 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:27.93. Mary Kelly followed with a winning time of 1:37.61 in the women's 600-meter dash, while Jersey Jones (25.22) and Darci Wiseman (25.35) challenged each other for the top spots in the women's 200-meter dash, with both setting new career bests.
Evie Hannenberry earned a first place in the women's mile as she crossed the finish line in 5:05.81, as Brooke O'Brein was hot on her heels finishing third in 5:08.85. Joey Perry, Jones, Emma Randecker and Darci Wiseman ended the meet in style with a new UNI record time of 3:40.97 in the women's 4x400-meter relay to finish in second.
Entering the weekend, UNI leads the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in 12 events.
