CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI track and field suits up for its final competition before the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Outdoor Championships this Friday as it heads to Madison, Wisconsin for the Badger Challenge.
As the outdoor conference championships approach, the Panthers look to continue to build on their momentum from six individual titles last weekend with one at the Drake Relays and five at the Kip Janvrin Open as well as two unattached victories from Panthers at the Kip Janvrin Open.
At the Drake Relays, freshman Spencer Kessel topped the field in the men's shot put, leading the competition from wire-to-wire and registering a best throw of 17.62 meters. The victory is his first in the event since winning the MVC indoor shot put title back in February in Chicago.
At the Kip Janvrin Open, the men's hammer throw saw a trio of Panthers top the field as Jacob Baier (60.39m), Bo Braunecker and Justin Olson (56.93m) all finished 1-2-3, while Brendan Safley continued his stellar season with a win in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.95 meters.
On the track, Paige Kisley grabbed her third win of the outdoor season in the women's 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 14.58 in the preliminary heats before winning the event in 14.58 seconds. Madelyn Sanda set a new career-best with her first-place effort in the women's 100-meter dash in 11.88 seconds.
In the men's 400 meters, Zach Fall recorded a new career-best time of 48.07 seconds as the lone Panther in the event. Elsewhere in the sprints, Tinashe Chigudu and Luke Meyers, both competing unattached, claimed the top two spots on the podium in the men's 100-meter dash, with Chigudu posting a winning time of 10.43 seconds, and Meyers following in 10.49 seconds. Chigudu also won the men's 200 meters in 21.20 seconds unattached.
