UNI track & field: Panthers win five events at Kip Janvrin Open

INDIANOLA, Iowa --- During a highly packed weekend of competition on the track and field schedule, UNI athletes came away with five first-place finishes, as well as wins in two events by unattached Panther athletes on Thursday and Friday at Simpson College's Kip Janvrin Open.
In the men's hammer throw, a trip of Panthers topped the field as Jacob Baier (60.39m), Bo Braunecker and Justin Olson (56.93m) all finished 1-2-3, while Brendan Safley continued his stellar season with a win in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.95 meters.
On the track, Paige Kisley grabbed her third win of the outdoor season in the women's 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 14.58 in the preliminary heats before winning the event in 14.58 seconds. Madelyn Sanda set a new career-best with her first-place effort in the women's 100-meter dash in 11.88 seconds, as Ariana Yaklich (12.21) took fourth, Eva Van De Mortel (12.24) placed fifth and Libby Wedewer (12.29) took seventh as an unattached athlete. Sanda also finished second in the women's 200 meters (25.08), with Yaklich taking third in a career-best 25.22 seconds and Van De Mortel placing fifth (25.38).
In the men's 400 meters, Zach Fall recorded a new career-best time of 48.07 seconds as the lone Panther in the event. Elsewhere in the sprints, Tinashe Chigudu and Luke Meyers, both competing unattached, claimed the top two spots on the podium in the men's 100-meter dash, with Chigudu posting a winning time of 10.43 seconds, and Meyers following in 10.49 seconds. Chigudu also won the men's 200 meters in 21.20 seconds unattached.
Other notable finishes included five runner-ups, including Amelia Hill's second-place effort in her collegiate debut in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:00.97), and Kendra Nissen's second-place performance in the women's 800-meter run (2:14.83). Competing unattached, Carlie Jo Fusco took second in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:04.72), while the attached Anna Winterrowd followed in third (1:05.57). Emma Joens grabbed third-place in the women's discus with a toss of 41.59 meters, as a trio of unattached Panthers in Sebastian Swistak (48.62m), Carson Lienau (47.27m) and David Russell (46.24m) placed second, third and sixth respectively in the men's discus.
